INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 43
The Erudite headquarters are extremely chaotic. The invasion has begun and people are running for safety. Despite the craziness, Cara is able to lead them to a control room where the information might be stored. There, Marcus and Cara get to work on the computers.
As they work on the computers, Caleb enters with a gun. He reveals that he’s there to put an end to their actions. He knows the secret that Jeanine now hides and he’s intent on keeping it a secret. Marcus and Caleb argue on the importance of secrets. Marcus calls Caleb selfish. Then, in the heat of the argument, Tris is able to kick Caleb and force him to drop his gun.
Tris yells at Caleb. She doesn’t understand how somebody who loves her was able to stand by and watch Jeanine torture her. He argues that he couldn’t have done anything. Tris says that he could have risked himself for her.
The only useful piece of information that Caleb reveals is that their search for the information at this computer station is pointless. Jeanine keeps private information elsewhere. Unfortunately, Caleb refuses to tell them where to go. Marcus is quick to knock him out just before they leave towards Jeanine’s secret laboratory.
On the seventh story the group runs into one of the factionless that has invaded. It’s Edward and he immediately recognizes them. Tris says that they will get past him no matter what. Unfortunately, Edward isn’t willing to let them go. Tris and Christina get in a scuffle with him. The scuffle ends with Christina shot in the leg, and Edward shot at the side. Their wounds are not life threatening.
Marcus points out that the wounded Christina will only slow them down. Christina agrees and she stays to guard over Edward. They all know that Jeanine will get rid of the data if they don’t get to her in the lab in time. They must move quickly.
