INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 11
Tris and Tobias are escorted to the Candor’s holding room. Tobias sits on a bench, while Tris paces back and forth. Tris is trying to run all of the scenarios in her head as she moves along. Why is she being deemed a criminal by the Candor? She worries that her actions against the Dauntless, as they escaped the Abnegation headquarters, could have been deemed criminal by the Candor.
Tobias asks her to calm down. Afterwards, he asks her if she’s hiding anything that he doesn’t know. He has the sneaking suspicion that she is. Something is bothering her. She leaves him under the impression that the thing that is bothering her is the loss of her parents. In reality, she’s bothered by the fact that she killed Will and he doesn’t know it.
A few people enter the room, including the Candor leader. His name is Jack Kang. Jack is straightforward with them. He saw a video recording of Tobias as the one who was controlling the Dauntless attack. Apparently, the video recording was saved to a few other locations, other than just the hard drive that Tris stole and kept safe. Tobias is being charged with the crime of directing the attack and Tris is being charged with aiding him. They also observed Tris in the control room. They saw Tobias fighting her and then leaving with him. Tris tries to defend herself; however, Jack would rather wait until they are interrogated to hear answers. They have truth serum they’ll be using on the “criminals.”
The two have to play the waiting game until the interrogation begins in a few hours. Tris confesses to Tobias that she is afraid of reliving the past.
Tris falls into a slumber before being awoken by people entering the room. One of them is none other than her old friend from the Dauntless initiation, Christina. Tris is more nervous to see her than excited. Christina and Will were close to each other, and Tris killed him. Christina mentions their dead comrade. Tris plays it off as if she observed Will being killed in the monitors of the Dauntless headquarters. Tobias knows that she didn’t observe this. He watches her closely, perhaps confused, as they travel in an elevator.
Christina comforts Tris about the truth serum. She says that they enter a sleeping-like state while under the influence of the stuff. Christina also tells Tris that their old friends are all there at the compound. Zeke is the only one who sided with the Erudites.
Tris and Tobias are taken to a room that is surrounded by benches where people sit and wait. In the middle of the room is an area with a Candor symbol. This center area is also where the questioning will take place. Tobias will be injected with the truth serum first. Niles, the questioner, injects Tobias as Tris watches helplessly from the sidelines.
