Tris is out in a hallway on a mattress when Lynn approaches her. She tells Tris to stop acting like a baby and toughen up like a true Dauntless. Then, she has Tris follow her to a room of bunk beds where other Dauntless reside. She forces her brother, Hector, to give up his bunk for Tris. Then, she has Marlene go find Tris some clothes.
Uriah comes by and informs them of plans to go to the Hancock building to spy at the Erudites from up above the city. Tris volunteers to go with them. Lynn and Marlene are also going to go.
A few hours later, they prepare to leave. Tobias comes around and is invited to go, but he decides to stay at the compound. Tris figures it’s because of his fear of heights.
Lynn and Tris head to the exit of the Candor headquarters. As they walk, Tris inquires on why they all left their Dauntless home. Lynn says it’s because of the surveillance there. Erudite could access the video systems.
The two finally reach the exit where Uriah, Marlene, Shauna, and Lauren are waiting. Uriah introduces Tris to Lauren. He informs her how Lauren went through his fear landscape. Lauren was a transfer, so Tris had assumed that she would have gone through Four’s fear landscape. Four was the trainer for transfers, so Tris assumed that is how it worked. Apparently, though, Four never let anybody go through his landscape.
Suddenly, their conversation is interrupted by a random attack by Dauntless traitors. They come barging in wearing blue armbands and shooting blue lasers at everybody. The other Dauntless fire real bullets back. Soon, Tris finds herself shot by one of the blue lasers.
