Dinner is unique. They pass around and share canned goods. As they eat, Edward strikes up a conversation. He asks them about their factions. Tris says that they are all former Abnegation. She tells Edward that she and Tobias became Dauntless, while Susan and Caleb remained Abnegation. Caleb, of course, did not actually stay Abnegation, but Tris is hesitant to reveal that he is an Erudite.
Tris asks Therese what factions are present within the factionless. She says the number one faction is Dauntless, followed by Erudite, Candor, Amity, and some Abnegation. She remarks on how most people pass Abnegation initiation. The Dauntless’ ruthless initiation is a bit more difficult to pass, thus their large numbers within the factionless. Tobias further reveals that the old Dauntless are either forced out of their faction or they can choose to kill themselves. Tris has a light bulb moment in which she realizes that the Dauntless headquarters are not well-suited for the old.
Edward enters the conversation. He seems rather happy he didn’t end up a Dauntless. The conversation is then sidetracked to the incident that forced him out of the Dauntless initiation. Back during initiation, Peter stabbed Edward in the eye with a knife during a fight. Tris had always assumed that the evil Peter started this fight; however, Tobias points out that it may have been Edward who began the scuffle. Edward neither denies nor confirms that he started things, but a smirk on his face helps Tris determine that he indeed started the fight.
Tris falls asleep while others around her talk. She finds the chitchat around her soothing, since listening to others covers up the sound of her own inner voice. Eventually, she hears Evelyn and Tobias talking. She hears Tobias asking about the map in the boiler room. Evelyn says that it’s a map of safe houses. The map also indicates where the factionless’ Divergent are. Evelyn admits that when the Abnegation began giving aid to the factionless, they also started testing people to see if they were Divergent. Evelyn wants to keep track of the Divergents since the Erudites might come after them. Her knowledge of the Divergents is limited to this. She doesn’t know why they’re wanted or why they were tested.
Evelyn confesses that Marcus kept close watch on Tobias since he thought he was Divergent. With such a close gaze on him, Evelyn assumed that Marcus would take good care of Tobias. Evelyn then reveals the factionless’ plan: they hope to rule by conquering the Erudite and by disposing of all the factions. Lastly, Evelyn asks for Tobias’ help. She sees the potential in him as a leader and she wants him to seize it.
