Lynn has given Tris a gun and Tris is trying to get over her fear of using it. Tobias had pointed out earlier that ever since she shot Will, Tris hasn’t been able to fire a gun. Tris tries to get herself to practice with it in the bathroom, but it isn’t working out for her.
Tris is interrupted by Tobias. Tobias is interested in knowing if Tris is going to go eavesdrop on Jack Kang during his meeting with the Erudite representative. Before she gives him an answer, she asks Tobias why he attacked his father. He remarks that he did it to gain the respect of his people. Tris finally understands that Tobias wants respect so he can eventually attain a leadership position among the Dauntless.
Tobias presses for an answer. He wants to know if she is going on the eavesdropping trip. She says that she does indeed intend to go. Tobias tries to convince her to stay out of harm’s way, but Tris is too stubborn to listen. Tobias, seeing that Tris is going to go no matter what, decides to join her and their friends on the spying endeavor.
The scene skips to Tris and her friends making their way to the area where the Candors and Erudites will meet. Zeke and Uriah are good shots, so they decide to take to the buildings surrounding the meeting area. Meanwhile, Tris and the other Dauntless find good hiding spots among the bridge where the meeting is going to occur. They hide below the top of the two story bridge.
Soon enough, the two sides approach the bridge. The person who represents the Erudites is one of Jeanine’s top leaders, Max. As Tris listens to Max speak, she finds something suspicious about his voice.
The conversation begins. Max makes it clear that they are not there to negotiate since the Candor are of no value to the Erudite. Instead, Max brings on his demands. He wants Eric returned, he wants the Divergents, and he wants to find out who wasn’t injected with their serum.
As Tris listens, she realizes that Max is probably listening to words that Jeanine is feeding him through headphones. She knows Jeanine must be around. Jeanine is probably watching everything transpire from somewhere nearby.
Lynn is also on the move. They all see how disgruntled Jack has become and how tense the scene has turned. Before they know it, Lynn has shot Max.
Tris and her accomplices make their escape in the muddy water-bed below the creek. Tris decides that they should make their way to a glass building where Jeanine was probably watching everything. As they run, the Dauntless who were with Jack and the Dauntless traitors who were with Max shoot at each other. Tris and her group run past the commotion.
When they make it to the building, they see some people making an escape. Tris immediately recognizes Peter and she eyes somebody who might have been Jeanine. Peter holds his ground with his gun pointed at them. Tobias, right next to Tris, also has his gun pointed at Peter. Tris and Tobias decide to back off to go aid their friends.
