Caleb is eating and discussing how biotechnology changed agriculture. The Erudites, according to Caleb, were able to create a vitamin rich, dirt-like substance that helped plants grow. Tris understands that the Erudites were necessary to drive their factions forward. Their creative genius promoted progress.
As they speak Tris notices a group of Amity sitting near them. The Amity show no interest in Caleb and Tris. Tris mentions that she never had any interest in joining the Amity. Caleb, out of curiosity, asks Tris about her aptitude test results. Tris is hesitant to tell Caleb about her results. Her test results were flawed because of her Divergence. Tris deliberates in her own head and then comes to the conclusion that she must trust her brother. Trust is important in their relationship.
She reveals that her test showed that she could be Abnegation, Dauntless, or Erudite. Tris further reveals that her test administrator was able to manipulate the test in such a way to show that she could join these multiple factions. Caleb cannot help but wonder how Tori, Tris’ test administrator, was able to manipulate the test. Caleb studied the aptitude test and he knows that such a feat is not something that is taught to the test administrators. Tris recalls how Tori told her that she was originally Erudite; perhaps, during her time as Erudite, Tori learned a thing or two about the aptitude test. Caleb cannot help but wonder about Tris’ mental chemistry. She is so different than him.
Their conversation is interrupted by a group of Abnegation who come into the cafeteria. Susan plants herself right next to Caleb. Tobias is the next enter and he sits next to Tris. He is annoyed with the Amity who tried to resolve something with Tobias. Tobias won’t disclose what they were trying to resolve, however, he promises to tell Tris later.
Tris looks over at the Abnegation and recalls everything she put up with when she was Abnegation. She is happy she is no longer one of them. Moreover, she wants to be as different as them as she can be.
An unknown person approaches Tris from the back and he grabs Tris’ right shoulder. It’s the same shoulder where she was shot. Tris is not surprised to learn that it is none other than Marcus. Marcus tells them that they must leave soon. Following his Abnegation principles, he thinks it’s selfish that they hide out and do nothing while their people die back at the Abnegation’s home. The Abnegation people are still in dire trouble. Tobias thinks it’s a good idea to leave soon too. Marcus leaves them so he can join the other Abnegation in the cafeteria.
Tris assumes that Marcus has a hidden agenda. She is smart enough to know that there must be some other reason why Marcus wants to leave. She also is curious about Marcus’s conversation with Johanna. Tris is intent on learning Marcus’ secret.
