Tris helps with the cleanup efforts by sweeping the ground at the lobby. She, as well as everybody else, is stunned to see two Dauntless traitors outside. Tris recognizes them immediately as Zeke and Tori. Zeke is dragging Tori along. She has been shot in the leg.
Tris is quick to come to their aid. She demands that the nurse, Helena, come to help them. Zeke explains that they were spying on the Dauntless traitors by pretending to fit in with them. When they were discovered they tried to get away, but Tori was shot.
Soon enough, they all come to the Candor’s Gathering Place. Zeke was interrogated and his story turned out to be true. He sits with his friends Uriah, Lynn, and Tris. Zeke describes how he helped a bunch of Erudites to escape the compound. These Erudite traitors didn’t want to be associated with what their faction was doing.
Cara enters the room and goes over to Christina. Tris, of course, becomes anxious at the site of this. She killed Cara’s brother, Will, when he was a part of the brain-washed Erudite army. The group discusses whether or not Cara is an Erudite spy, but Zeke and Lynn argue in Cara’s defense. Cara spoke to Zeke about escaping the Erudite compound earlier. Moreover, Cara saved the Candor compound with a warning during the most recent attack.
Cara and Christina step out of the Gathering Place for some alone time. Tris follows them and she eavesdrops as the two girls talk about Tris. Christina is having a hard time being around Tris, whereas Cara uses logic and understanding to reason why Tris killed Will. Cara seems to be a little more understanding than Christina. Cara throws in a few put-downs about Tris, but overall she tries to convince Christina to put herself in Tris’ shoes. She wants Christina to comprehend why Tris killed Will.
Back in the Gathering Place, Tobias has entered with news. Kang plans to meet somebody who will speak on Jeanine’s behalf. Kang will be escorted to this meeting by some Dauntless.
The group begins to ponder how the Erudite will act and what they’ll say when they meet with Kang. They figure that Tris will have an answer since her Divergence seems like it would be capable of thinking like an Erudite. Tris, of course, doesn’t have an answer.
Shauna interrupts the conversation and remarks on how Tris and the other Divergents can’t even be trusted. She believes they have no allegiance to any certain faction since their brains aren’t wired to be a part of a particular faction. Shauna storms off after making her comments.
The conversation returns to how things might unfold during the meeting between the Erudites and Candors. Tris explains that they just need to put themselves in the Erudite’s shoes to understand how they see the situation. Zeke can’t understand this and he remarks on how the Erudites will probably just shoot Jack Kang.
Tris goes onto remark on her fear. She’s afraid that Jack Kang will be pushed in the wrong direction to help the Erudite and protect his own Candor people. For this reason, Tris believes that they should eavesdrop on the upcoming meeting. The others seem interested in her plan.
