INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 10
Tris makes her way to the restroom to wash up a little. She finds an empty sink that she uses to run cold water over herself. Susan comes by with a towel that she holds up to give Tris a sense of privacy. Other women wash up without the normal bashfulness that is usually expected. Susan takes her turn to wash up. Susan informs Tris that she might be going to another safe house that is filled with a bunch of Abnegation.
After getting ready, Tris returns to the area where everybody else is. People are leaving to paint messages to other safe houses in secret code on billboards. Evelyn confesses that this was her idea. Then she opens up to Tris, confessing that she was Erudite before she became Abnegation.
Tris tries to poke at her for more information. She wants to know why Evelyn chose Abnegation. Instead of giving Tris a direct answer Evelyn says that she, like Tris’ father, had her own reasons for leaving Erudite. Tris is stunned to hear that her father was previously Erudite. Evelyn doesn’t stop there. She goes into more detail about Tris’ father’s upbringing. Tris’ dad, Andrew, was family friends with Jeanine Matthews. The two were raised together. The information clicks in Tris’ head. Her father never wanted to talk about his background. Furthermore, it always seemed like he had a personal vendetta against the Erudite.
Evelyn apologizes for disclosing this surprising information to Tris. However, Tris is smart enough to know that Evelyn said all of this to hurt her. Tris snaps back at Evelyn and remarks that she knows she’s up to something. She doesn’t seem very loyal to her son Tobias. She’s taking advantage of him.
After Tris leaves Evelyn, she finds Caleb and Susan. Tris contemplates if she should tell Caleb about these new found family secrets. Before she can say anything, Caleb says that he’s going to go with Susan to go see other Abnegation who are in hiding. They invite her to go with them; however Tris is intent on sorting things out. In particular, she wants to visit the Candor headquarters to find answers there.
Soon enough, Tris and Tobias make their way to Candor headquarters. Tris is perplexed by the size of the place. She also comes to the realization when they get there that they don’t need to be doing this. They could just live their lives among the factionless while events transpire around them. Nevertheless, she pushes forward with Tobias.
In the Candor headquarters are a bunch of Dauntless guards. One of the guards, a girl, is not too happy to see them. She doesn’t seem to recognize them and she is harsh towards them. They are forced to give up their weapons and they are treated like they’re in trouble. Apparently, the guards were told to place them under arrest if they got there.
