 INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 12
The questioning of Tobias begins. Tris stands with Christina at the side as the interrogation begins.

Tobias has to answer easy questions first. He is asked what his name is. He reveals his name is “Four.” Then, Niles asks for his real name. Tobias answers willingly with his real name, “Tobias.” He isn’t so willing to answer, though, when asked for the names of his parents. Niles has to ask twice before Tobias gives the truthful answer.

The crowd is stunned at the revelation that Marcus’ son is Tobias. Not many people knew that the person that Marcus had been so cruel to was Four. They all must have read the propaganda that Jeanine spread about him.

The next question is very difficult to answer. Tobias is asked why he switched factions, and he hesitantly admits that it was to get away from Marcus.

The questions begin to head towards the heart of the matter, the reason why Tobias controlled the Dauntless during the attack. Niles begins this series of questions by asking what Tobias recalls. Tobias admits that he remembers not being controlled by the serum that impacted the other Dauntless because it didn’t work on Divergents. The crowd goes crazy, yet again, with the news of Tobias’ Divergence.

Christina, also, questions Tris on if she herself is Divergent. Tris confesses to her friend that she is indeed Divergent. Christina is left in shock and wonder.

Niles gets the crowd to quiet down and his questioning of Tobias continues. Tobias goes into detail about the special serum Jeanine used on him. The serum made him see everything from the opposite perspective: friends were enemies and the destruction of the simulation became him controlling the simulation. The only way he was able to conquer the serum was when Tris confounded his mind by not killing him when she had the opportunity.

Lastly, Niles asks Tobias for his top regret. He admits that he regrets becoming Dauntless. He even was going to leave the Dauntless until Tris came around.

Niles, then, turns his attention to Tris. It is her turn to be interrogated. She injects herself with the needle. Quickly, she enters a relaxed state in which her mind goes quiet. Niles asks for her name and she is fast to answer. Next, he asks why she left the Abnegation. Tris says that it was because she wanted more freedom and because she wasn’t meant for them.

As Niles proceeds to ask her about the day the Dauntless attacked, it occurs to Tris that she is feeling the impact of the truth serum. She begins to recount what happened when the Erudite took control of the Dauntless. She recalls how she pretended to be hypnotized until she found Tobias. Jeanine caught them, Tobias was taken away, and her mom came to save her. Tris’ mom sacrificed herself so that Tris could escape to safety. Somehow, as Tris speaks, she is able to manipulate the truth. She is able to remove parts of her story that involve her shooting and killing Dauntless soldiers, including Will.

Tris continues describing how she made it to the Dauntless headquarters where her father sacrificed himself for her. When she found Tobias, she couldn’t bear to kill him so she left herself at his mercy. She also remembered how she, during a fear landscape, killed herself to avoid killing her family. She knew that perhaps handing Tobias the power would maybe give him the nudge needed to snap out of it. It worked.

Niles, then, asks Tris if she too is Divergent. She says admits to it.

Niles praises Tris for destroying the Erudite’s simulation. Her actions truly make her a true Dauntless.

The last question soon comes along. Niles asks Tris what she regrets the most. She admits to killing Will when he was about to shoot at her. The crowd thanks her for telling the truth, while Tobias and Christina just stand speechless.
