INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 37
Tris wakes up in the morning, takes a shower, and then exits the bathroom only to find her friends in Tobias’ room. Uriah, Christina, and Lynn are all in Tobias’ room. The group heads downstairs so Tris can have breakfast. In the living room, they encounter a group of factionless and Tobias playing cards. Tobias hands Tris a bunch of food. As she eats, Tobias explains that Evelyn took control of her old house and had Marcus go elsewhere. Evelyn and Peter sit off talking together.
Suddenly, Edward enters the house. Edward and Peter have a harsh history together. Back during Dauntless initiation, Peter and Drew attacked Edward. Somehow, Edward lost both the fight and an eye during the attack. The injury forced Edward to leave Dauntless initiation and join the factionless.
When Edward sees Peter, he hastily makes his way to him. Peter doesn’t have much time to react before he finds Edward with a fork to his throat. Edward doesn’t stab Peter, but he warns him that a stab will come if Peter messes with him. Evelyn calms down the aggressor.
The scene returns to Tris who is speaking to Tobias. Tobias wants to make sure Tris is at ease back at her old faction’s home. Tris says she is.
Just before sunset, Tris makes her way out into the Abnegation sector alone. The sector is filled with life since so many people have gathered there. She walks to the Abnegation headquarters and enters it. Inside, she is eventually greeted by Marcus.
Marcus is interested in speaking to Tris about the Abnegation secret he holds. It’s a touchy subject for Tris since so many people have died because of this secret. Furthermore, she’s been chased and tested on because of this secret. Marcus reveals that he wants to tell her the truth.
Finally, he begins confessing his knowledge to Tris. He tells her that the factions originally all came from somewhere outside of the fence and they all had a reason for being placed there. The time came when the Abnegation sought out to fulfill their purpose; however, they couldn’t do so without the Erudites. Jeanine, not being too happy with the purpose the Abnegation revealed to her, attacked the Abnegation just before the truth was revealed.
Furthermore, as Marcus explains, the upcoming attack will lead to the destruction of the secret data that the Erudites took from the Abnegation headquarters. To make matters worse, Marcus reveals the real reason why Tris’ mother was in the Abnegation headquarters the day she saved Tris from death: Natalie was really there to get the Abnegation’s secret file before it got to the Erudites. It was just a complete coincidence that she was there at the same point in which Tris was about to be killed. Natalie saved Tris instead of saving the file.
Tris is skeptical of Marcus’ revelations. She wonders if he can be trusted.
