They continue following the same path of the railroad tracks. The tracks will lead them into the city. Tris feels the train track vibrating. They become aware of a train approaching. While Caleb is hesitant about jumping onboard, the others seem to know that it is their best bet. They are tired, sore, and in dire need of help. This is their chance to stay safe and get some aid.
They all jump inside the moving train. On the train they are greeted by many factionless. All of the factionless seem to be holding some kind of weapon. One of the factionless, a young man with an eye patch, seems to be in charge.
It takes Tris a while to recognize Edward as the man with the eye patch. During the Dauntless initiation, Peter stabbed Edward in the eye and thus forced him to drop out of the initiation.
A factionless woman tells them that they must jump off the train. Susan whimpers and cries, begging the factionless to let them stay on board. Caleb describes the specifics of their situation to the group of strangers. Then, Tris speaks to Edward and she reminds him of how she was there for him after he got stabbed. She tended to his wound until help arrived. Edward remembers Tris well and he’s more than happy to return the favor to her and her alone.
Next, Tobias introduces himself as Tobias Eaton. The people onboard all recognize his name. They are all quick to lower their weapons. It seems that Tobias’ name has paid everybody in his group safe passage into the city.
When they make it to the city of the factionless, Tris helps Susan off of the train. Tris is familiar with the area since she use to walk it when she missed the bus. Now, on the ground, they make their way through a dirty, smelly ally and into a storehouse where a bunch of factionless have gathered.
Tris is stunned to see how the factionless have created their own community in what looks like a faction of their own. Tris asks Edward how this community is possible. The factionless were known to wander on their own, searching for the bare necessities needed for survival. Edward informs her that the Abnegation helped them with necessities and from then on they were able to begin forming communities.
Edward leads them to a woman named Therese. Therese then takes them through a boiler room to a woman who is maybe in her 40’s. She looks eerily similar to Tobias. Tobias speaks to her, revealing her name. It is Evelyn. Tris had assumed that Evelyn, Tobias’ mother, was dead. Evelyn even had a funeral back at the Abnegation compound. Evelyn says that it’s about time that Tobias came looking for her.
Next, Evelyn asks that Tobias introduce his entourage. He introduces Susan Black, Caleb Prior, and Tris Prior. Evelyn knows the Priors. Behind Evelyn is a map of the city and a chalkboard with odd handwriting. Caleb has a curious nature and he asks Evelyn if some of the points on the map are safe houses, like the one they’re in now. She doesn’t want to really answer.
They leave the room to make their way to dinner. Tobias and Evelyn converse. She welcomes Tobias to stay since his knowhow could come in handy. Tobias doesn’t know why he should stay. There apparently is some unresolved tension between Tobias and his mother. Evelyn, with a hint of emotion in her words, says that she wants him to stay because he is her son. Tobias doesn’t want anything to do with her and her small, factionless group. She remarks that the number of factionless is immense. Moreover, according to Evelyn, this “small” group could play an important role in everybody’s future.
As they walk to get food, Tobias admits that he has known for a good year that his mother was still alive. She contacted him to reveal this truth and they met up. According to Tobias, Evelyn was forced to leave the Abnegation after she cheated on his father. Tobias understands why Evelyn cheated on Marcus. Marcus treated her no better than he treated Tobias. He can’t forgive her for abandoning him with Marcus.
Despite their bitter history, Tobias knows that their best chance for survival is if they stay with Evelyn and the factionless.
