 INSURGENT -- CHAPTER 3
Tris returns to her room to make sure that her gun is still hidden beneath her mattress. One of the Amity’s conditions is that no weapons are allowed there and she doesn’t want anybody to find out that she is hiding a gun. She reflects upon the situation and she is, of course, worried.

Tris peers outside and she sees Johanna and Marcus walking together. Instinctively, Tris goes outside to follow them. She quickly catches up with them and stalks behind the two. She wants to hear what they have to say. Johanna makes it clear to Marcus that she has her suspicions on why Jeanine chose to attack when she did. Johanna believes that something prompted Jeanine to attack, yet she doesn’t know what that something is. Marcus is quick to retort that perhaps they will never know what caused the Erudites to attack. Johanna wasn’t born yesterday. In fact, she was born Candor and she catches Marcus in a lie (the Candor are harbingers of honesty and they are trained to be human lie-detectors). She knows that Marcus knows the true reason for the Erudite attack.

Johanna presses Marcus for answers. Marcus confesses that the Abnegation were entrusted with important information that they cannot easily disclose. He remarks on how those close to him, his friends, have been killed because of this information. He is incredibly headstrong. After losing his friends, there is no way he is going to unseal his lips and reveal this secret information. Marcus knows without a doubt that Jeanine was after the Abnegation’s secret. Johanna lays a guilt trip on Marcus. She believes he should disclose the information; after all, trust is the centerpiece of a good, peaceful relationship.

The scene turns back to Tris who is stunned by her new found understanding behind the attack. Jeanine wasn’t necessarily seeking power when she attacked. This was Tris’ original assumption. Jeanine was, actually, after classified information that people like her father took to their graves.

Tris heads back to the compound and she finds Tobias and Caleb in Tobias’ room. They are messing around by throwing knives at cheese (Tobias is doing some target practice). Caleb remarks on how good Tobias is at dagger throwing. With Tris now present Caleb decides to leave to give the two lovebirds their privacy. Caleb’s excuse for leaving is that he has to go read about the fascinating world of the Amity water filtration (exciting for a curious Erudite).

When they are alone, Tobias reveals the real reason behind Caleb’s visit. Caleb is concerned about his little sister’s relationship with Tobias. Before long, Tris and Tobias end up canoodling. Tobias, however, brings them back to their senses. He is wise enough to know that Tris came to see him with a purpose.

Tris reveals what she overheard in the orchard. Tobias remarks on how it was simply Marcus attempting to stay up on his high horse. Marcus, according to Tobias, is filled with lies. He thinks Marcus lied to make himself feel and seem important. Tris thinks that Marcus wasn’t lying. Tobias goes onto bring up a good point. Even if Marcus is hiding a secret, their current situation and their current problems are more important than any Abnegation secret. They’re trying to survive right now and staying alive is their current priority.

Tris is obsessed with the truth, though. The truth very well saved the lives of many people when she uncovered the Erudite plan. If Tris had not uncovered the truth behind the Erudite scheme to control the Dauntless and kill the Abnegation then things would have been very different. The truth is extremely important.
