Tobias tells Tris that one of the Erudites that stormed the building had betrayed her people. While the Dauntless swept the building story by story, this one Erudite came up several stories to warn the loyal Dauntless of the attack. That Erudite traitor helped to give the loyal Dauntless just enough of an opportunity to create a successful defense against the onslaught. Ironically enough, the Erudite traitor is none other than Will’s sister, Cara.
Tris moves to the restroom to remove a needle from her shoulder. It is shaped like a tack with an extra-long needle. It served as an injection device, but Tris doesn’t know what it injected her with. It seems to have knocked them unconscious.
She is interrupted by Uriah who politely enters. Uriah fills her in on what has occurred so far. Marlene and Lynn are fine. Eric’s wounds are being taken care of and he is being held as a prisoner.
Next, Tris and Uriah speculate on what Jeanine’s intentions are. They can only guess as to why she attacked the Candor compound and why she wants to capture some of the Divergents. Uriah believes that Jeanine just wants power.
The next day Jack Kang holds a meeting in the cafeteria. There, Tris is reunited with her brother. Caleb is pleased to see that Tris is okay. Caleb has barely arrived at the compound. He came with none other than Marcus. Somehow, Marcus survived when they ran from the Amity compound. Caleb also tells Tris that Peter also survived, but he left to join the Erudite.
Tobias is the next one to check in on Tris. He holds her and she wishes she could just stay in his arms. Tris realizes, though, that Tobias doesn’t know about his father’s whereabouts and she decides to lead him out of the cafeteria to tell him. Tris tells him that Marcus is there and Tobias doesn’t have much of a response.
The two, then, take the elevator to the eighteenth floor for some privacy. They discuss why Jeanine attacked the Candor instead of the factionless first; they figure that the Candor were easier targets. Then, they discuss how the Erudite serum works. Tobias reveals that the serum causes a simulation in the brain and the serum connects with a computer. He says that the serum wears off after a while. Regardless of this fact, Tris is still concerned about the serum in her system.
The two continue to ponder Jeanine’s intentions. Tris believes that the serum they were injected with is capable of lasting for a long time. She worries that this is a new serum that can be initiated whenever the Erudite want. Tobias doesn’t believe this is possible.
Tobias, then, scolds Tris for not running away when she had the chance. She could have escaped with Uriah in the downstairs lobby right after the attack began. Tobias doesn’t comprehend why she didn’t do so.
Back at the cafeteria, Tris meets up with Caleb, Lynn, and Marlene. Tris is happy to have her brother around. Lynn is nosy and questions Caleb about his love interest, Susan.
Uriah joins them later. Uriah describes how Eric was questioned. Unluckily, Eric was incredibly ignorant of Jeanine’s master plan.
The conversations conclude with Caleb questioning the Dauntless about the fear scenarios. Meanwhile, Tris lays her head on the table only to slumber off.
