Tris follows Marcus when he leaves the compound. He goes to the water filtration area. There, Tris watches the water filtration system do its magic. The machines are able to clean up dirty water effortlessly. She wishes that there was a similar device she could use to filter out all of the negatives in her life.
Tris makes her presence known. She lets Marcus know that she overheard his conversation with Johanna. She knows that Marcus is keeping something important to himself. While she waits for Marcus to react, Tris notices how good-looking of a man Marcus is for his age. Although she is not at all attracted to him, she understands why Johanna (a woman of Marcus’ age) might find him handsome. Instead of attraction, though, the top attribute that Tris sees in Marcus’ face is the same darkness that Tobias sees.
Unsurprisingly, Marcus is annoyed by the fact that Tris followed him. He’s also annoyed that she knows about the Abnegation secret. He makes it very clear that she will never get the truth out of him. Tris puts a guilt trip on Marcus. For the first time she vocalizes the fact that her father died. She points out that he probably died to help keep this secret safe. Marcus reveals that her father did die to keep the information safe. Marcus is caught off guard at the thought of losing his friend Andrew Prior, Tris’ father. He is ready to tell Tris something, but he stops himself.
Tris tries to convince Marcus that she can help him with the secret. Marcus is incredibly untrusting. He doesn’t trust Tris to help him. He believes that what she accomplished back at the Dauntless headquarters was a fluke. He believes she just got lucky. Tris, out of frustration, states that Marcus is nothing but a big-headed jerk. She leaves.
Tris comes to an understanding that if she wants to learn the truth she cannot go to Marcus for it.
That night Tris has a nightmare in which she sees Will’s dead body being pecked at by crows. She awakens and is a startled mess. She gathers herself just enough to go to Tobias’ room. He comforts her, although she cannot reveal what is bugging her. He has yet to learn that she killed Will.
The two kiss. The kiss becomes more and more passionate; and their innocent canoodling begins to transform into more intense physical intimacy. Part of Tris knows that she must stop this burst of intimacy, but the other part longs for it. As they continue to kiss and embrace Tobias accidentally touches Tris’ injured shoulder. The pain brings her back into the dismal reality that she was trying to escape. Logically, she understands that this physical moment was just a way for her to escape her emotional pain. She knows that this is not a healthy way to cope with her mental anguish.
The physical affection stops. Tris cannot help but cry. Tobias comforts her by saying what happened to her parents shouldn’t have happened to anybody. As she doses off, Tobias looks over her and he whispers that he loves her.
