Tris awakens in a room that is slowly being filled with water. There is a camera in the room that Tris stares at with as much bravery as she can.
As the water in the room rises, she begins to remember how her mother baptized her in water when she was young. She also remembers her father carrying her around like an airplane when she was little. The memories help her relax.
Suddenly, Tris sees a figure outside of the tank. She figures she is hallucinating until the figure shoots through the glass and frees her. It’s her mother.
Her mother has shot and taken down the Dauntless soldiers that were guarding the tank. She shoots at and kills other soldiers as they make a dash for safety. Her mother lets her know that her family is hiding out in a basement and they must get to them. She also reveals that she had been spying on the trains, just waiting to find Tris so that she could save her.
As they make their escape, she reveals that she too is Divergent. Her mother, Tris’ grandmother, was a Dauntless leader who helped her keep her Divergence a secret. She also explains to Tris that as a Divergent they are free-thinkers and unable to be conditioned to a certain manner of thinking; consequently, they are seen as dangerous to the factions.
Soon, Dauntless soldiers are upon them. The soldiers approach from the rear and the front. Tris’ mother instructs her to run down an adjacent ally towards the building where her family is hiding. Her mother will stay back and distract the soldiers.
At first, Tris refuses to leave. Her mother, though, tells Tris to be brave and uses words to nudge her into the ally. Tris follows her instructions, but is horrified to watch as her mother is shot and killed by the Dauntless. Her mother sacrificed herself so that Tris could escape.
