In the morning, Christina wakes Tris up. Tris had been dreaming of Peter beating her up until she confessed to being Divergent.
Christina leaves for breakfast, leaving Tris alone to get ready. Tris stares at herself at the mirror. She doesn’t recognize her own bruise and battered reflection.
Christina returns with breakfast. She helps Tris tie her shoes since it hurts too much to bend down.
The two leave the dormitory, walk through the Pit, and enter the glass building above the Pit. There, at a train track, they find the others. They all hop aboard a moving train. Al is kind enough to help Tris onboard.
Once onboard, Peter makes a wisecrack about Tris looking “stiff.” Will and Christina come to Tris’ defense and they begin to argue with Peter. Four puts an end to all of their arguing.
On their way to the fence, Tris asks the group what is beyond the fence. Christina mockingly says that they’re protecting the city from monsters. Will mentions that five years ago the Dauntless only guarded the factionless within the city.
The train roars past deteriorated buildings and finally comes to a stop at a field. At the field, the group finds the chain-linked, barb-wired fence that runs past further than the eyes can see. Four takes them to the fence’s gate that leads to the outside world. The gate opens up at an ancient road that leads into the city.
Tris reminisces about coming to this area with her family when she was younger. They would visit the Amity’s farms outside the gates for fresh fruit.
Peter comments on how those Dauntless who rank low become gate guards. Tris thinks to herself about the Dauntless positions that are available. The Dauntless can work as fence or city guards, work within the Pit, or work for the heads of Dauntless operations.
The fence gates open to let an Amity truck come through. On top of holding fresh apples, the truck also contains Amity persons, one of whom recognizes Tris. As the truck stops before the gate, this Amity boy comes up and hugs Tris. It’s none other than Robert, Susan’s brother and a former Abnegation. He’s surprised by her bruised face and remarks that she can probably go back home to become an Abnegation again. He says that she deserves happiness. Tris remarks that it’s not all about happiness for her. As soon as the truck starts back up, Robert departs with it.
The Dauntless guards lock up the gate when the truck leaves. Tris is confused as to why the lock for the gate is on the outside and not on the inside.
Four approaches Tris. He remarks on how she shouldn’t be talking to others from another faction. He also suggests that she make wiser decisions, like using her speed to attack first in fights. Tris makes a wisecrack on he wouldn’t know how well she fought since he left before her fight with Peter was done. Four responds by saying that he didn’t want to watch her get beat up.
