DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 34
Tris and Tobias are taken to the Abnegation headquarters to Jeanine. There, they find her on the phone instructing that some of the Dauntless soldiers go somewhere to protect something.
Jeanine focuses her attention on Tris and Four. She is not entirely shocked by the revelation that Tris is Divergent. She is surprised, though, by Four’s Divergence.
After a few smart remarks from Tris and Four, Jeanine discusses why she has brought them there. She wants to test a new serum to see if it works on Divergents. She also wants to, perhaps, figure out why Divergents seem to surface from the Abnegation faction.
After Jeanine calls Divergents weak-willed, Tobias remarks on how it’s the Erudites who are weak since they are the ones who had to force the Dauntless people to do their dirty work for them. Jeanine remarks on how it was the Dauntless leaders who were all too willing to sacrifice their people for a chance to have a part in government decisions. She also hints at the fact that she plans to get rid of Abnegation and the factionless by brainwashing them too.
The war of words between Tobias and Jeanine continue. Tobias is appalled by the fact that Jeanine would attack innocents. Jeanine states that all Abnegation, like Tobias’ father, were not innocent. Tobias agrees Marcus and other Abnegation had their faults, yet they did not ever go to the extreme that the Erudite are now undertaking.
Jeanine goes onto describe how the new serum she’s created will force people to enter fantasy worlds where she can manipulate their senses of sight and hearing. Tobias will be the first guinea pig for this serum, whereas Tris will be executed soon since she’s too injured to try the serum.
Upon hearing of Jeanine’s plans for Tris, Tobias plants a kiss on Tris and lunges at Jeanine. He strangles her until Dauntless guards come to her rescue. Tris can’t do much since the guards bring Tobias down. Jeanine then injects him with her new serum.
When the guards let go of Tobias, he runs to Tris and tries to strangle her. It’s clear that he doesn’t realize who Tris really is. The guards pull Tobias off of her and they escort him to a control room. Another set of guards take Tris to room B13 where she assumes she will be killed.
