DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 13
The next day begins with more target practice. This time, however, they are using knives to hit targets. Four shows them how to throw and then they all line up to throw too.
Prior to throwing, Tris practices her throwing stance without ever actually throwing a knife. She knows that this is a mental challenge and her practice will be worth it.
Minutes pass and Al gets mocked by Eric for not being able to hit the target yet. Al throws one other knife which sails pass the target. Eric tells Al to go retrieve his knife, but with daggers flying everywhere Al refuses to go. Upon admitting that he is afraid of getting struck by a dagger, Eric has everybody leave the area. Next, he has Al stand before a target and he has Four prepare to throw daggers at the target. Al will have to stand in place until he doesn’t flinch at oncoming daggers.
Before Four has a chance to throw, Tris calls Eric out for bullying Al. Eric then allows Tris to take Al’s place. She must stand before the target while Four throws daggers and she must stand there without flinching. If she does flinch, then Al will return to the target.
The first two daggers miss Tris by a few inches. Before throwing another knife, Four suggests that Al takes her place. Tris refuses this notion and braces herself for another knife. The dagger is skillfully thrown to purposely scratch her ear. The cut leads Eric to call it a day. Eric is impressed with Tris’ bravery.
Everybody leaves but for Tris and Four. Tris questions Four’s motives for almost taking out an ear and for suggesting that Al take her place in front of the target. Four points out that she is blind to his motives.
