Tris is having a dream in which her mom is calling out to her. Her mom has her open up a pot on the stove and inside of it she sees a boiling crow staring at her.
Suddenly, Tris is awoken from her dream by Christina. She lets her know that something has happened to Al. They make their way to a ledge of the Pit where Al is being hoisted from down below. He has fallen inside of the river. His corpse, swollen with water, is hoisted up.
Everybody believes that Al committed suicide by throwing himself into the chasm.
Christina, overcome by grief, keeps a tight grasp around Tris’ arm. Tris, also overcome by grief, falls to the ground. She watches in disbelief, almost laughing a nervous laugh, as the Dauntless discover that the body bag that was retrieved for him is way too small for his large body. Not able to watch anymore, Tris runs off.
Tris finds her way to Tori who comforts her with a hot drink. From the tattoo parlor, Tris watches the funeral proceedings outside. The Dauntless commemorate Al’s passing with more of a celebration than a somber funeral. She’s accustomed to the sad funerals of the Abnegation.
Tris questions Tori on how she handles the pain of losing her brother, Georgie. She says that all days feel different.
The Dauntless gather on the Pit. The smell of alcohol fills the floor.
Tris is able to find her friends. She stands with them when Eric begins to talk. Eric, surprisingly, gives Al a good speech in which he commemorates Al’s braveness for jumping into the unknown. He even calls Al a Dauntless for having such courage.
Tris is turned off by Eric’s speech and the cheering of the crowd. She knows that it was pride that killed Al.
She takes off down a hallway to get away alone, however, she is followed by Four. She vents to Four, telling him that she doesn’t understand how somebody who was depressed and tried to murder her gets all this good publicity. She believes it sets a bad example for others.
Four then gives Tris a stern warning. She has to be careful what she says because the Dauntless leaders have their eyes on her. He goes onto warn her about her intentions. The Dauntless leaders observe their intentions because they prefer to see simple intentions, rather than intentions that pose any kind of threat. Four worries that if she follows any Abnegation-type instincts, then those in charge will do away with her.
Tris questions why Four is helping her, even stating that she doesn’t need his help. Four says that he instinctively wants to destroy her, yet he is intrigued by how fear awakens her.
Tris then is held close by Four as she admits her guilt for not doing more to prevent Al’s suicide. Four tells her to learn from her mistakes and to learn from her guilt. Tris recognizes this teaching as something that the Abnegation say and she questions Four’s origins. Four tells her not to worry about it and he gives her a peck on forehead.
