DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 8
The next day, after very little sleep, Tris goes into action with the other recruits. They are beginning their initiation in order to see who will be ranked the highest. Their initiation is composed of different stages that will test physical, emotional, and mental abilities.
Today, they begin by shooting a gun at a standard, circular target. Tris shoots countless times, failing to hit it each time. A boy, Will, mocks Tris for missing so many times. She shoots with more focus after his insults and her bullet hits the edge of the target. Eventually, Tris hits the middle of the target, making her feel powerful.
Later, at lunch, Tris eats with Christina and Al. While she eats, Tris fears that people will learn of her Divergent status. Will, an Erudite, joins them at the table. He explains that he can’t eat with the other Erudites, Edward and Mayra, because they are a couple and being with them is awkward. Tris watches Edward and Mayra as they kiss. She is baffled at their public affection. The others let her know that kissing in public is okay.
Following lunch, the group heads out to their next part of initiation. In a room with a chalkboard, they are taught how to punch and kick using punching bags. Four teaches Tris to use her elbows and knees. To help with her technique, he touches her belly. His touch causes her body to run aflutter.
After their training is over, the group has free time until they go to bed. Christina decides to take Tris clothes and makeup shopping. She dresses Tris up, puts eyeliner on her, and makes her look ravishing. Tris is even taken back at her own reflection in the mirror. Moreover, she is taken back by the fact that she can stare at herself in the mirror; as an Abnegation, this was seldom allowed to do this.
Tris pays for the dress with monthly points that she is allocated. The two, then, head off to find Al and Will at a tattoo shop. There, Tris is shocked to find Tori (the woman who gave her the aptitude test). Tris presses Tori for answers on her Divergent status; however, Tori quickly silences her questions.
Tori, next, offers Tris a tattoo. Tris decides to get three flying raven tattoos that are meant to represent her family members. The ravens are to be drawn flying in the direction of her heart.
