Tris makes her way to a random hallway during lunchtime. She is still haunted with thoughts of blood after witnessing what happened to Edward in the dormitory and after cleaning up the bloody mess.
While she sits alone, one of the Dauntless initiates stops to talk to her. His name is Uriah. Word of what happened to Edward has spread and he understands why Tris is shaken up. To get her out for a bit, he invites her to a Dauntless initiation ritual. Technically, only those Dauntless with older brothers or sisters can be a part of it, but they’re able to sneak Tris in.
Gabe, another Dauntless initiate, makes a comment about Tris being with them. However, Uriah points out that she just went through something traumatic and should be cut some slack. Nobody else bothers to make comments about her being there.
The group runs through a doorway and they run up steps in the dark. Uriah says that it’s a back exit that has been unlocked for them. They emerge outside. Before long, a train comes by and they all hop onboard.
On the train, Tris asks Uriah where they’re going. He says that his brother, Zeke, hasn’t told them their destination. Another girl, Shauna, says that their destination is a surprise. Surprisingly, Shauna knows of Tris through her conversations with Four.
Shauna speaks kindly of Four. She mentions that he isn’t scared of anything and that he doesn’t attend this ritual anymore. Tris, knowing that Four fears heights, realizes that this ritual must have to do with heights.
Shauna mentions that when she was initiated with Four he taught her how to fight. She also hints at the possibility that Four once liked her.
The group reaches the point at which they must jump from the train. They are north of the city at an abandoned area of town. They run to a very tall building, the Hancock building.
Once inside the building, an emergency generator is used to power an elevator that takes them to the very top floor. Once at the top floor, the hundredth floor, Zeke props a ladder up to a hole in the ceiling. They all climb up to reach the roof of the building.
At the top, Tris gets an understanding of what they’ll be doing. They will be zip-lining from the top of the building all the way down to the bottom.
Shauna is the first to go. Following her, other Dauntless line up and then the initiates line up after them. Tris will be the first of the initiates to zip-line down.
After the people in front of her go, Tris is up. Zeke puts her within a harness and hoists her near the edge of the roof. Zeke and Uriah joke around with each other as Tris is being prepped to zip-line down. Finally, it is her turn to be thrown off the building.
As Tris zips downwards, adrenaline takes over. The trip started windy, cold, and difficult, but it gets better and more enjoyable.
When the zip-line comes to a halt, Tris finds herself about twenty-feet up high above the ground. Some Dauntless wait below so that they can catch her when she wriggles herself free from her harness.
When Tris makes it to the ground, she feels a sense of comradeship with those who caught her. She asks them if she can give the zip-line another whirl.
Later, during dinner, her friends seem upset at Tris for going with the other Dauntless and for abandoning them. Al is able to bring some humor into their conversation when he explains how Christina nearly got into a fight with an Erudite while Tris was gone. The Erudite was posing questions about the Abnegations in charge. Christina tried to defend the Abnegations.
Christina makes a wisecrack on how she was defending Tris while Tris was out and about away from her friends. It’s apparent that Christina is upset at Tris. Tris, however, can only focus on how much fun she just had.
