Divergent
 by Veronica Roth
  DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 12
Tris is back in bed after another fight. She fought Mayra, a terrible fighter, and easily beat her.

Tris and the other transfers are awoken when Dauntless figures, including Four and Eric, barge in the dormitory with flashlights. They instruct every transfer to get up, get ready, and be at the train tracks in five minutes.

At the train tracks, they see a pile of paintball guns. Tris takes a gun that is perfectly suited for her. She then hops on the train with the help of muscular Four. He offers her a hand and pulls her in.

As the train rolls along, Four describes how they’ll be split up into two teams for a game of capture the flag. Eric and Four are the team captains. They begin choosing members for their teams. Eric chooses Edward, and then Four surprisingly chooses Tris. Eric makes a wisecrack at Four’s pick of Tris by saying that Four is choosing people to serve as scapegoats in case his team loses. In reality, though, Four is choosing people who are narrower and quicker than the larger people that Eric is choosing. Al is the only friend who ends up on Eric team. The other people in their teams are composed of other Dauntless.

The teams jump off the train and find themselves just north of the Erudite headquarters. One of the Dauntless initiates, Navy Pier, mentions that when his brother played and won this same game that his team used the carousel as a place to plant their flag. They head in that direction.

To get to the carousel they must cross a bridge over a muddy river bank. Once across the bridge, the buildings they find are totally in ruin. They also are in complete darkness. Another Dauntless initiate, Marlene, uses a flashlight to light their path. Uriah teases Marlene’s “fear of the dark,” so Marlene turns off the light. They are left in darkness again. Tris likes the idea of being in the dark since it is preparing them for future moments when they might not have tools to help them.

They reach a marsh, pass an old Ferris wheel, and finally reach the carousel. Will suggests that they split up. They can have some people guarding the flag, while the rest of the team scouts for the enemies. Everybody else begins voicing their strategic opinions. Meanwhile, Tris is distracted by Four who just quietly looks up at the stars.

As everybody else argues on what to do, Tris decides to take initiative on her own. She decides to climb up the Ferris wheel to look for the enemies from high above. Four, who seems to have taken a liking to Tris, chooses to go with her. Tris grows a little dizzy with giddiness as she climbs. She’s giddy over being with Four.

As they climb, Tris and Four discuss the purpose of the paintball game. Tris realizes that the purpose is to learn strategy to prepare themselves for future occurrences. As they climb, Four also admits that he is afraid of heights. It’s a fear that he tries to ignore. Tris doesn’t seem to have the same fear. In fact, after reaching a safe platform, Tris decides to climb up even higher by using dangerous scaffolds and bars.

Tris climbs upwards with Four following below. Fear catches up with her as she climbs upwards, yet she continues. When they climb high enough, the two notice a light in the park below. It resonates from a pier.
Four and Tris find themselves awkwardly close enough to kiss. After a moment of awkwardness, they begin to climb down. During their descent, a bar that holds Tris’ feet crumbles below her. She is left dangling. Four rushes off to help by starting up the Ferris wheel. The wheel begins to quickly spin and Tris has to find the perfect moment to jump off. She makes it.

Four grabs her by the arm, causing the giddiness to return to Tris, and they head back to the carousel. There, one of the Dauntless shuns Four for giving away their location with the Ferris wheel’s movement. Four describes how they used the Ferris wheel to learn the other team’s whereabouts.

Next, Tris comes up with a plan. They will split in half and attack the pier from both sides. One of the flanks will distract the enemy, while the other flank slips in from the back to surprise the enemy.

Soon, the plan takes shape. Tris, Christina, and Uriah form the flank that stealthily approaches from the rear. The other half of the team battles Eric’s team at the front of the pier. Uriah takes out a girl guarding the flag and Christina is able to grab the flag from a tree branch. Tris, at first, is a little jealous of Christina’s actions; however, Tris realizes that she already earned glory since it was her plan that won them the flag. With Cristina’s capture of the flag, Four’s team wins the game.

On the train ride back, the enemy initiates continuously stare at Christina. Tris is kind of happy that she isn’t being seen as the hero of the game for this reason.
