Tris has a nightmare that night. She dreams that Christina is hanging on the railings and about to fall. Tris, as the only Divergent, is the only one who can help her. When she does help her, though, she is pushed to her doom.
Upon waking up, Tris goes to the restroom only to return to find that somebody has spray painted “Stiff” on her bed. “Stiff” is a derogatory term for the Abnegation. Tris finds this word written everywhere on her bed.
Peter is awake and is consequently the given culprit for the crime. He is fluffing his pillow nearby. Tris questions him, asking why now that they’re both Dauntless he is treating her this way. He points out that they aren’t and never will be both Dauntless.
Al helps Tris clean up the mess. He also mentions that Will is recovering fine after his beating. Al is still shaken up over what he did to Will.
The group heads over to the training room where the fights will continue today. Christina has returned pretty banged up; luckily, she is able to walk. Tris is stunned to see that she will be going up against Peter today. Yesterday, Peter fought Drew and beat him to a pulp.
While they watch Molly and Edward fight, Tris tries to figure out what to do about Peter. He’s a tall guy who has a knack for sensing people’s weaknesses.
Soon, with the defeat of Molly at Edward’s hands, it’s time for Tris to stand up to Peter. She attempts a kick at him, which he blocks. She falls to the floor only to get up and get punched in the face. After she suffers a few more hits and kicks, she tries to remain on her feet while the world spins around her.
Tris glances at Four who walks out of the room. Soon after, she falls to the ground and screams in pain. Somebody calls the match as Tris blacks out.
Later, Tris awakens in a bed surrounded by Al, Christina, and Will. There are rows of beds in the hospital room where she rests and one nurse in the distance. Al asks if Tris is doing alright and Tris confirms that she is okay.
Tris reflects on her first hospital trip. Her mother fell and was treated at a hospital by an Amity woman. Caleb told their mom that she would heal quickly from a hairline fracture the fall had created. Tris wonders if Caleb knew of hairline fractures from something he had read
Christina and Will leave for dinner. Al stays behind. He tells Tris that tomorrow morning they’ll be visiting the wall with Eric. He also discloses the fact that he thinks Tris is pretty. Tris thinks to herself and knows that she could never be with somebody as mentally weak as Al.
Before he leaves for dinner, Al tells Tris that he too lost a fight earlier that day versus Drew. He could have fought him, but stopped fighting and conceded after a while just so he wouldn’t have to hurt anybody else.
Al asks Tris one last thing before he leaves to dinner. He wonders if their families will come visit them next week during Visiting Day. Tris thinks it is unlikely.
Al leaves and Tris is left to think about Visiting Day. She knows that her father was not happy with her becoming a transfer initiate, so she doesn’t expect to see her parents. She wonders if things would have been different had she declared Divergent at the Choosing Ceremony. Tris’ grows frustrated at her thoughts and begins to cry.
After her tears are shed, she finds her way back to her dorm.
