DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 31
Tris is back in her room after the fear simulation. She reflects on how hard it was to face her fears.
While Tris continues thinking about the fear simulation, a few of the Dauntless leaders enter. They congratulate her on passing the simulation and welcome her to join them later at a dinner.
Before they leave, Eric pulls out a syringe which he says contains some kind of Erudite-created tracker that will help them know where all their citizens are at all times. Tris doesn’t trust whatever is in the syringe, yet she knows that she must obey Eric.
After being injected with the tracker, Tobias sticks around to talk to Tris. He congratulates her on only having to deal with seven fears. He invites her over to the dorms to spend time together until the banquet.
At his dormitory, Tris is visibly shaken up. Tris rejects Tobias’ kisses, and she questions his intentions. He makes it clear that he isn’t after sex. Tris then admits that the reason why she’s so afraid of him is that she is afraid of getting close to people. Tobias admits that he, like Tris, has never gotten close to anybody.
The two begin to canoodle and Tobias discovers Tris’ newest tattoo. It is an Abnegation symbol. Tobias is quick to show Tris a similar symbol that he has tattooed on his back. He is, surprisingly, a bit timid to remove his shirt in front of Tris.
After a bit more PG-rated physical affection, Tris admits that Tobias was one of the things that she encountered in her fear landscape. They continue canoodling for a bit longer.
