Tris’ fledgling romance with Four has made her incredibly giddy the next day. Christina thinks it’s odd, but Will defends her cheerfulness.
She becomes especially giddy when Four walks in for breakfast. Tris now refers to Four as Tobias when she speaks his name to herself.
Tobias decides to sit next to Zeke, some ways away from Tris. Her heart sinks.
Tris’ friends begin to speak of the fear landscape. They discuss how they will be facing the instructor’s fear landscapes. Christina is hopeful that they’ll get to see Four’s fears; Tris, though, knows better.
The initiates move to the fear landscape area where Lauren, an instructor, describes what they might encounter in the fear landscape. On average, people experience between 10 and 15 fears. Tris is impressed by how few fears Tobias has in comparison.
Lauren informs them that they will each be facing one of her fears in today’s simulation. She even tells them what fear they will encounter. Tris is last in line for the simulation, and she will face the fear of kidnapping.
After everybody else has gone, Tris enters the simulation. The simulation very closely mimics her kidnapping by Albert, Drew, and Peter. In the simulation, she is overtaken by unknown hands that take her to the chasm. She begins to panic and scream. Then, somebody says “stop” and the simulation ends.
Tobias is there and he belittles Tris’ reaction to the simulation. Emotions race through Tris and she hits Tobias in the face. She tells him to “shut-up” and she leaves the simulation room.
