Tris and Four hold hands as Four leads her down a secret path below the chasm. They make their way to a safe spot to sit with their feet just above the river water.
Tris finally has the nerve to ask Four about his aptitude test. Tris secretly hopes that Four is too Divergent. He reveals, though, that his test result showed him as Abnegation. Even though he was chosen as Abnegation, he chose to go Dauntless to get away from his dad. One of the reasons why he chose not to become a Dauntless leader was to avoid his dad when the faction leaders meet.
Four also opens up on how he doesn’t feel exactly like a Dauntless. He is smart enough to realize that the selflessness he grew up believing is a form of bravery. He points out instances in which Tris also acted with selflessness, like when she just spared him from the blunt hit of a belt. Tris voices how observant Four has been of her. Four admits that he has been observant because he has a crush on her.
Four asks Tris to call him Tobias. Meanwhile, Tris is dumbfounded at the fact that Four likes her. She points out some of her flaws, while Four vocalizes her characteristics that make him like her. He especially likes the fact that despite his fear of his father, Tris doesn’t pity him or look down at him.
Four lands a kiss on Tris. Tris isn’t sure if she did it correctly, however, she is comforted by Four’s accepting gestures. She feels as if their blossoming feelings are so right that they were meant to be.
