After everybody has jumped into the Dauntless’ chambers, they walk down a passageway. Eventually, the group splits up with the original Dauntless going with Lauren and the new Dauntless going with Four. Tris is left with nine newcomers composed of former Erudites, former Candors, and herself as the only former Abnegation.
Four lets them know that they are headed towards the Pit. Christina makes a clever remark about the Pit, and she is quickly silenced by Four. Tris now knows to be weary of Four’s temperament.
They finally reach the Pit. It is a large underground cave composed of rock walls that are connected with narrow, rail-less paths. The walls have areas for things like food and fun.
Tris sees quite a few people around. She wonders about the old Dauntless, since she doesn’t see any. She also sees children running about the paths as if it is the easiest thing in the world to do. She misses the order of her home a bit; however, she is intrigued with the disorder in the Pit.
Four continues his tour and shows the newcomers the chasm. The chasm is on the side of the pit. It consists of a river down below the Pit. The river has both a wild, rough side and a calm side. He warns them never to jump into it since it will lead to death.
The next stop on the tour is a dining room. They are welcomed with a standing ovation. The group finds its way to a table where they are to dine on hamburgers. Tris has never had a hamburger, which leaves Christina a bit perplexed.
Their dinner is interrupted by Eric entering the dining area. Eric, a Dauntless leader, decides to sit at the same table as the newcomers. He is a tough looking youngster with multiple piercings all over his face. Eric has Four introduce Tris and Christina to him. Four and Eric continue with an uneasy conversation. Four is tense as they speak about a position that Max has offered Four.
After Eric leaves, Tris questions Four about Eric. They were both part of the same group of transfers from other factions. When Tris questions Four further, she basically is told that she is too curious.
Following dinner, for whatever reason, Eric steps into take the place of Four. He takes the newcomers to a door and lets them know how training works: they train for most of the day with a lunch break and free time after six o’clock. After initiation, they are ranked with the other Dauntless (those sixteen year-olds who stayed with their original Dauntless faction). The ten highest ranked will be allowed to remain with the Dauntless. The others will be tossed out without a faction. The newcomers are a bit peeved since they would have been secured a faction if they had chosen something else other than Dauntless. Things work different with the Dauntless, apparently.
Next, Eric opens the door to their sleeping quarters. There, Tris is hit with the reality that at home she had her own place to sleep in a comfortable room, but here she has to share a dormitory with others. Homesickness makes Tris emotional, however, she is able to hold back her tears.
Next to her, the largest of the newcomers begins to sob loudly. His name is Al. Tris isn’t sure if she should comfort him. She decides not to since they are all feeling the same pain as him.
