Tris and Tobias make it to the dining hall together where they each enter alone to join their own friends. Christina and Tris discuss what Dauntless jobs they are thinking of picking up. Christina wants to become a trainer for new recruits, Tris wants to become a faction ambassador, and Will wants to move up the ranks to Dauntless leader.
The conversation turns to the fears that they faced in the simulation room. Christina noted the leaders chuckling at one of Tris’ fears and she questions her on what it was. Tris hesitantly admits that she’s afraid of intimacy.
Their dinner conversation is soon interrupted by Eric who commences a welcome speech for the new Dauntless recruits. He opens his speech by stating the original Dauntless ideals that the new members must choose to follow. In short, the Dauntless believe that bravery must be used to face and conquer the evils of society. Tris notes in her head that these ideals aren’t really being followed anymore by the head-honchos.
Eric goes onto mention how the recruits were scored. Their total score was derived from combat training, simulation training, and the fear landscape. Then, Eric reveals the top ten initiates who will remain and join the Dauntless: first is Tris; second is Uriah; third is Lynn; fourth is Marlene; fifth is Peter; sixth is Christina; seventh is Will; and the other three are Dauntless-initiates that Tris doesn’t know.
Tris has mixed feelings on Drew and Molly becoming factionless. She is excited that her friends, Christina and Will, are joining her as Dauntless.
Tobias and Tris take a moment to embrace and kiss in public. Nobody seems to notice their affection.
As Tobias brushes Tris’ serum injection site with his hand, it dawns on Tris that the Erudite are planning to get the Dauntless to fight for them with the injected transmitters. She asks that Tobias meet up with her in private later so she can reveal her theory to him.
