It’s nighttime and Tris is at the chasm with her friends. They just got new tattoos. Tris got an Abnegation tattoo, even though she knows that it’s a risky tattoo to have.
The group decides to throw down some recent Erudite propaganda into the chasm to relieve some stress. On the front of an article Tris spots a picture of the Erudite representative, Jeanine. She questions Will about her. He says that Jeanine worked alongside his sister in the development of simulation serum.
Tris asks what Will thinks of Jeanine’s articles. He says that she has some valid reasoning since it wouldn’t be bad diversifying the government a bit.
Finally, it’s time for bed. Before they head off, Tris sights Four in the distance and decides to go after him while the others take off for sleep.
Tris follows Four up into the glass building. There, Four notices her and invites her to enter his fear landscape. Apparently, Four wants to share some of his secrets with her.
They both inject each other with a serum that will bring them together with the program.
The program begins and they find themselves high above the city. They are atop a building. Tris knows that they have to leap off the top down to the ground below. They do so easily. The simulation ends and moves onto the new fear simulation.
Suddenly, the walls and ceiling close down around them. They are stuck in a small space together. Tris leads them into constricting themselves even further. She knows that be cloistering themselves up they will defeat this simulation.
They come close together, yet Four is still too anxious for the simulation to end. Tris tries to calm him by placing his hand on her heart so that he can see how calm her heartbeat is; unfortunately, with Four being so close, her heart is going crazy. She admits that it’s not the claustrophobia that has her heart racing.
Tris changes the tactic and has Four focus on her breathing. By following her breaths she thinks he might calm down. It doesn’t work entirely.
Tris then tries to hit at the origin of this fear and she asks why Four claustrophobic. He describes how when he was little he would sometime be disciplined by being locked in a closet. It’s a sour subject that Four would rather not talk about.
Tris decides to do some talking to get his mind away from the current situation. She asks Four to ask her anything. He questions her racing heart. This conversation leads to Four laughing and with his laughter the walls disappear.
The conversation takes a little turn and the aptitude test is mentioned. Four admits that the aptitude test doesn’t teach you much about yourself. He also admits that it wasn’t the test that brought him to the Dauntless.
Suddenly, the next simulation begins. Four must shoot and kill a woman who appears before them. It isn’t easy for him to do. Once he does it, Tris begins to wonder why most of these simulations appear to be so effortless for Four.
The next simulation then begins. An Abnegation man approaches them. Tris immediately recognizes him as one of the government leaders, Marcus. She puts two and two together, recalling how Marcus had a son Tobias who left to become Dauntless. Four is Tobias.
Marcus approaches Four with a belt. Four raises his arms to protect himself from a lashing. Tris stands in the way of the belt, taking the hit for Four, and also taking the belt from Marcus. Marcus charges at Tris, but Four stands in his way. The simulation then ends.
Tris then realizes how Four got his name. He only has four fears.
Next, Four holds Tris close and runs his hand through her hair. He recognizes how she helped him through his fears.
The two take off when Four states that he has another surprise for Tris.
