DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 29
Initiation day has finally come to the Dauntless compound. The Dauntless treat it like a party day. There are Dauntless everywhere just drinking.
Tris reflects on her time as Abnegation. She wonders if she still is Abnegation or if she truly is Dauntless. She also tries to figure out how to warn her Abnegation parents of the Erudites’ plans.
Soon, Tris is on her way up to the fear simulation room with the other initiates. The initiation will conclude with the simulation of their own fears within the virtual-reality room.
The initiates make their way to the glass building. There, other Dauntless are gathered to watch the initiates in the fear simulation. They will watch them from big television-screens. The Dauntless will be able to watch the initiates’ reactions to fear; they won’t be able to see the actual fear that the initiates’ minds create.
The initiates finally enter a waiting room. There, the Dauntless leaders sit hooked up to a machine that allows them to observe the fear simulation. The initiates also get to sit around and observe their peers in the fear simulation room from a large television screen. The initiates wait in line to go in one by one. Tris will be the last to enter the room.
The other initiates enter the room and then depart it. Tris waits helplessly and anxiously for her turn. Her turn finally comes. She enters the room and Eric injects her with simulation serum.
