DIVERGENT -- CHAPTER 30
The simulation begins and Tris remembers it immediately. It is the same scene as the other fear scenario in which birds attacked her from above. She knows that this scenario exhibits being powerless, so she must overcome it by demonstrating strength and power. She begins to feel around the grass below and she chances upon a gun. She uses it to take out the birds that are about her.
Her next simulation puts her in a tank of rising water. There is no way out of the covered tank as the water rises, so she knows she must overcome this test of weakness by breaking the glass. She tries time and time again with no results. She then decides to envision the walls of the tank as ice. The walls become ice and she is easily able to break out.
The next simulation is one in which Tris is stuck in an ocean of water. She clings to a rock as her only salvation. The water is trying to force her down into it. She recognizes that the simulation is testing her ability to stay in control. She regains control of her own mind and is able to find a way up and out of the water.
As Tris runs from the water’s edge, she feels herself being tied up in rope. All of a sudden, she is tied to rope and up on logs that tower above the ground. Below her, other initiates gather. Peter is one of them and he sets the logs on fire. As the fire begins to burn her, Tris is able to take control of the situation and create a thunderstorm that brings rain to the ground. She is saved.
Suddenly, Tris finds herself in her bedroom at her Abnegation home. She looks out the window to see scary looking men that she recognizes as people who ran the aptitude test. They are able to somehow get into her room and she knows they’re there to kill her. With them in the room, other people pound at her window.
Tris knows that she must protect herself from the men. She envisions a gun in a closet and she’s able to find it there. She shoots at the men who then disappear.
Then, as quickly as the men disappear, disfigured humanoid figures who were pounding at her window enter her room. She finds refuge in her closet. There, she hides until a door appears behind her. She goes through and this simulation ends.
Next, she finds herself in front of Tobias. He takes off her jacket, kisses her, and grabs her at the hips. Tris recognizes her fear of affection. She pushes Tobias back and verbally declares that she will not sleep with him. She is able to let out a few giggles before the simulation ends.
The next simulation puts Tris before her family. She is wielding a gun and next to her stands Jeanine. Jeanine urges her to kill her family. Jeanine gives her ten seconds. With time pressing and not sure what to do, Tris puts the gun to her own head and presses the trigger.
