Katniss hears Snow’s laugh above all else. She also notices that from the look of blood spewing from his mouth that he is dying from internal wounds. Her arrow would have only quickened his death.

She then realizes that her only hope is to kill herself with the nightlock in her sleeve. Peeta, though, prevents her from using it.

Katniss then shouts out for Gale, hoping that he will shoot her dead. It doesn’t happen.

Katniss ends up alone in a dark jail cell. She’s suffered injuries from her struggle against a few guards who took her down to the cell.

During her time in the cell, food is brought to her as well as pills. She consumes some of these items, but eventually she decides to kill herself by ignoring her rations and medicine. She’s quick to notice, though, that some of the medicine that she is now discarding must have been morphling. She begins to go crazy when she stops swallowing these pills; consequently, she begins to take them again.

To keep her sanity intact while locked up, Katniss begins to focus on her singing. Her singing gets better and it also entertains her. She begins to sing the seasons away.

During her time in the cell, Katniss has much time to think. Her thoughts form a hate against those heartless individuals who could kill innocent children so easily. These thoughts and her singing remain her only company while imprisoned.

One day, Haymitch finally comes to free her from her prison. She is taken onboard a hovercraft by Haymitch and Plutarch. Plutarch fills her in on what has happened. New elections were held to replace President Coin and Paylor, the former commander of District Eight, was elected president. The other big occurrence was Katniss’ trial in which she was pardoned for her crime. Now, Katniss is being allowed to go back to District Twelve.

Plutarch is dropped off in another district and Katniss continues to District Twelve with Haymitch. Katniss is returning home alone since her mother cannot bear going back to Twelve. Her mother is still working constantly to escape the loss of Prim. Haymitch is going back to Twelve to be there for Katniss.

Katniss returns back to home where she remains indoors all of the time. Greasy Sae comes by with her grandchild each day to prepare breakfast and dinner for Katniss. Other than that, she lives alone without any interaction with others.

At one point, she explores her house a bit, only to return to the couch for a nap. She has a daunting dream in which she’s being buried by the deceased. When she awakens, she runs outside towards the sound of some actual digging. It’s Peeta planting some bushes. Katniss seems excited to see him.

Peeta lets Katniss know that he is planting bushes of primrose, a flower, in honor of Katniss’ sister. Katniss approves of the gesture.

Without saying a word more to Peeta, Katniss darts into her house to the rose that Snow left for her ages ago. She takes it and burns it. With the smell of Snow still about, Katniss rids herself of the stench by showering and burning her clothes. She was still wearing the same clothes that she had on at the Capitol.

During breakfast, she learns from Greasy Sae that Gale has moved to Two. After learning of this news, she suddenly decides to go hunting.

Katniss makes her way to her hunting grounds and walks to the lake where she once spent much time. She thinks about Gale for a while before heading back home.

Once home, she is surprised to find Buttercup there. Somehow he got there from District Thirteen. Katniss has an emotional outburst in which she tells Buttercup that Primrose is dead. She is overcome by grief and eventually passes out sobbing.

When she awakens, she finally begins on the road to recovery. The most therapeutic thing she does is create a book that showcases the lives of those who were lost during the reign of the Capitol. Katniss, Haymitch, and Peeta all contribute to the book.

The healing continues as a whole in District Twelve too. People return, fields are planted, and a medicine factory is erected.

Katniss depends on Peeta to help her proceed with her life. The two fall in love.
