Peeta realizes that whatever is whispering Katniss’ name is out to come get her. In a panic, Katniss wants to separate and leave the group behind. Instead, they insist on staying together and to protect Katniss. They distribute weapons among themselves and they begin their escape.
Katniss figures that it’s a pack of mutts that are tracking them. The squad is a ways ahead of the mutts as they dart forward. They can, unfortunately, hear the screams of Avoxes being attacked by the mutts in the distance.
As they continue their escape, they are suddenly overtaken by the scent of roses. It’s a smell that is always around President Snow and it’s a smell that consequently makes Katniss sick to her stomach.
Katniss escapes the stench by entering the Transfer. She takes out a pod there, but another pod is detonated. It kills Messalla. Peeta signals the terrified group to push forward.
The group can’t move forward because ahead of them a line of Peacekeepers are closing in. They fire at the squad and the squad fires back. Between the squad and the Peacekeepers lies another pod called the meat-grinder. It has yet to be triggered.
Suddenly, mutts emerge from behind the Peacekeepers. The creatures, dinosaur-like, kill all of the Peacekeepers before them, and then they move towards the squad. Katniss detonates the meat-grinder and the squad moves towards an entryway to the ground level. Meanwhile, Jackson and Leeg 1 sacrifice themselves by staying behind to slow down the creatures.
The remaining squad members make their way across a bridge. With a never-ending onslaught of mutts approaching, they destroy the bridge and fire away at the creatures that have made it across.
Killing all of them seems hopeless, so the group presses forward. They make their way to a pipe that leads to the ground-level. The pipe contains a series of ladders and ledges that they’ll have to climb upwards. Pollux leads the group.
Katniss helps Peeta and Cressida up. She goes back down a ladder for the others, but she only finds an injured Gale who tells her to push forward. Down below them is Finnick who is being overwhelmed by the mutts. Homes and Castor are also long gone.
Katniss shouts out to Finnick to use his nightlock, and then she throws down and detonates the Holo. 
Pollux then seals the pipe they have just climbed and they all take a moment to recover.
Following their escape, Peeta is confused and apparently battling to stay in control of himself. Katniss instinctively kisses him to help him come to his senses. It works.
The group continues their upwards journey. They finally emerge in a woman’s home. Katniss kills the woman to avoid being caught.
