The next day, the group watches the news in Tigris’ shop. The rebels have come up with a new way to trigger pods. They’ve taken control of cars without any need of a driver. These cars are driven down streets to get the pods to detonate. The trick works for a while and allows the rebels to get in closer to the Capitol.

Still unsure of what to do, the group stays in the cellar while Tigris heads off to learn more of the rebel army’s advancement. When she comes back she lets the group know that the residents of the Capitol are fleeing like crazy. The residents are heading deeper into the heart of the Capitol, the City Circle. Those who live in the City Circle are forced to let fleeing refugees reside with them.

The group also watches a news report in which the Head Peacekeeper announces that everybody with a home or shop will have to allow refugees to live with them. This worries the squad since Tigris might very soon have to allow people to stay in her shop. They could probably still live in the cellar, but not without eventually being found.

Katniss decides that everybody except for Peeta will leave the next day. It’s too dangerous to bring him along if the group goes incognito. Peeta agrees with the idea. He wants to split away from the group in case they need a diversion. Gale gives Peeta a suicide pill just in case he’s caught when he’s on his own.

The next day, the group is costumed up by Tigris. Cressida and Pollux leave and Katniss waits a moment before leaving so she can take the handcuffs off of Peeta. She even hugs him before she departs with Gale.

Katniss and Gale walk with a large group of refugees. In front of them are Cressida and Pollux. Somewhere behind them is Peeta. All seems well until gunfire goes off, killing many of the refugees around them. Above them, on the rooftops, are rebels who are attempting to gun down Peacekeepers.

Katniss and Gale move along buildings in hope of not getting shot. They are lucky enough to salvage two guns from dead and dying Peacekeepers.

They are unlucky enough, however, to suddenly find themselves between an approaching rebel army and an army of Peacekeepers. Other refugees in front of them are taken out by a pod. Then, shooting begins and Gale and Katniss fight onwards, eventually ending up down in a stairwell.

Suddenly, a purple light begins shooting at people. Those touched by it are killed. There’s no telling where the light comes from. It kills everybody it touches in the block. Luckily, Katniss and Gale are safe in the stairwell.

Once the light is gone, Katniss and Gale trek onward. They play dead to escape an army, only to eventually reach a block where a pod opens a giant hole in the ground. The ever expanding hole swallows up refugees, troops, and anybody else in its way. To make matters more complicated, at the bottom of the hole lies something, perhaps mutts, that kill survivors.

Katniss scrambles to hold onto a ledge as the hole envelops her surroundings. Luckily, she’s able to climb her way out and onto the street again.

She begins shouting out for Gale, and she finds him hanging onto a building that somehow did not get swallowed by the hole. Gale is holding on for his life. From a distance, Katniss shoots open a door of the building and Gale is able to get inside. However, he’s captured by Peacekeepers.

Katniss is baffled as to what to do, yet she’s keen enough to hear Gale tell her to run. Katniss does so, yet she later questions herself and wonders if he was really telling her to take him out with her gun.

After having a good cry, Katniss gathers herself and follows some escapees to the City Center. There, she approaches the mansion. In addition to being protected by a large wall and by Peacekeepers, Snow has children surrounding the mansion to create a wall of innocents.

Katniss has little time to come to understand her surroundings before rebels arrive to take the City Center. People panic and Katniss finds her way up a flagpole to avoid the commotion.

She watches as the Capitol drops parachutes aimed at the wall of innocents. Some of the parachutes contain goodies for the kids. Some of the parachutes, though, contain bombs that injure and kill the kids.

Medics rush out to help the children, rebel medics. Katniss catches sight of one medic that looks like Prim. She rushes out to her. During her sprint to Prim, a parachute explodes near Katniss.
