Boggs is incredibly upset at the fact that Peeta is part of Squad 451 now. Katniss knows that President Coin must want her dead. Katniss even questions Boggs about this possibility. Boggs points out that President Coin always preferred Peeta over Katniss.
Boggs also shares his two ideas as to why President Coin might want Katniss dead. First of all, if the Capitol is defeated then Katniss will throw her support behind one of the potential new leaders of Panem. Coin wants that position and she isn’t sure that Katniss will support her. Katniss has great influence over the people, so Coin doesn’t even want to risk having Katniss around to support another potential leader.
Boggs, secondly, thinks President Coin wants Katniss dead because of the emotional firestorm her death will bring to the rebels’ cause. Katniss could potentially serve as a martyr for the people. Her death would fuel the rebels’ rage and drive their motivation to overtake the Capitol.
Later, during dinner, Katniss feels the tension among her squad. She knows she’s the cause of it. Haymitch brings some light into the picture. Her squad believes that Katniss and Peeta will eventually strike each other physically or verbally. Katniss hasn’t been the nicest to Peeta, so she might be fueling his anger.
Haymitch reminds Katniss that she promised to save him, to help him survive the last Quarter Quell. Katniss realizes that she has forgotten about her promise.
Shortly after, Katniss finds herself on watch over Peeta with Jackson. Members of the squad have been ordered by Boggs to take turns watching over Peeta. It’s late and Peeta should be sleeping, however, he eventually tries to make conversation with Katniss. He describes that his ability to differentiate reality from what’s not real has been impaired. Katniss describes herself as an ally to Peeta, but Peeta has his hesitations in believing it.
During the next day, Katniss, Gale, and Finnick work to help Peeta recollect what is real and what he was brainwashed to believe. He has questions about the Games that Finnick can answer, questions about home that Gale can answer, and personal questions about the past that only Katniss can answer. It’s a difficult process for Katniss.
The day after, Boggs announces that a new propo needs to be shot that makes the actions of Squad 451 a little more suspenseful and thus inspirational. They are going to be sent to a secure street in the Capitol to stage a mock confrontation. They will be dealing with a few pods that they are ready to handle.
The group finally prepares itself for the cameras on the secure street. They handle the first pod well. It shoots out bullets at them. The group even enjoys itself as they try to act out exaggerated expressions for the camera.
Trying to hold back his own chuckles, Boggs begins to look at his Holo for the next pod. He, unfortunately, steps on a tile that triggers a bomb. The bomb hits him hard and injures him severely. He has lost his legs.
