Katniss wakes up in a confused daze in a hospital room. She finds Johanna Mason in the bed next to her. Johanna comes to Katniss, sits on her bed, and injects herself with the morphling that should have been dripping into Katniss. Johanna has apparently becoming a bit of a morphling addict.

Johanna lets Katniss know that she survived her bullet because of her bullet-proof Mockingjay costume. The bullet came from behind the man she was addressing and it had apparently ruptured her spleen. Her spleen had been removed and now she is just recovering.

Gale comes into visit Katniss. Katniss scolds Gale a bit for his desire to block all entrances of the Nut, thus slowly killing everybody inside. His plan, of course, didn’t pan out and the train entrance was left open.

Gale lets Katniss know what happened after she was shot: the Capitol’s soldiers who escaped the Nut faced the wrath of the armed workers who also escaped. Katniss’ speech must have succeeded in getting the Nut’s slaves to rise up and defend themselves against their oppressors. The Nut finally fell and with it came the fall of District Two. Now, they can finally invade and attack the Capitol.

Katniss now has time to heal while preparations are made for their next move.

Katniss learns from Plutarch that they’re going to wait a bit before attacking the Capitol. That way the districts can take a bit to toughen up and settle in. They’ve been fighting for a while now and a break is well-deserved. The Capitol no longer has supplies coming in, so they must live off their rations for now.

District Thirteen even decides to rejoice with a celebration, a wedding between Finnick and Annie. Katniss and her prep team contribute by making a trip to Katniss’ old house in District Twelve with Annie. There, Katniss has dresses from the Victory Tour that Annie can use for her wedding.

Soon enough, the wedding is conducted. It’s a beautiful ceremony that’s elaborate for District Thirteen standards. It includes District Four traditions, song, and dance. Katniss even dances with Prim.

When the cake is rolled out, it’s clear to Katniss that Peeta played a part in decorating it.

Haymitch takes a moment to speak to Katniss about Peeta’s progress. Katniss had never planned to see Peeta, but now Peeta has asked for her.

Before long, she is off to see Peeta in his room. When Katniss enters the room several things are in place to secure her safety. Peeta is restrained, Katniss has an earpiece with Haymitch on the line, and doctors watch from behind a glass viewing area.

Peeta is unsure of Katniss when she enters. She quickly picks up on his sense of suspicion and she nearly walks out. He stops her, however, when he recounts the story of how they first met. It was the moment in which Peeta gave her loaves of bread when she was starving.

Peeta continues and questions Katniss’ feelings for her. He asks her if she really loved him during the Hunger Games. He also asks her how she feels for Gale. Katniss is angered by his questions and she storms out. She now realizes that the blind haze that accompanies love has fizzled away from Peeta, and he now sees her true colors.
