Katniss begins to train like crazy. She really intends to be part of the invasion on the Capitol.
She trains within District Thirteen at the Block. The Block is a mock Capitol street; it’s a street that looks just like a street at the Capitol. There, the trainees are bombarded with the most terrible situations possible. Katniss and Johanna fare pretty well against the tricks and practice drills in the Block.
Later, they are shocked when Peeta is brought to also train. Supposedly, he’s brought in for Panem’s morale more than anything. Now, the people of Panem will be able to see that Peeta fights on the side of the rebellion.
Eventually, Katniss graduates to the point in which she can be tested to see if she is ready to join the attack on the Capitol. Part of the test consists of a mock attack in the Block. Katniss fares well in the fight in the Block, until she is faced with a decision: she can either obey her leader by taking cover or she can take out several enemies by blowing up a gas drum. Katniss knows that she is being tested to see how well she can obey a command. Consequently, she decides to take cover. The gas drum is blown up by somebody else and she succeeds in a victory against her enemies.
After her success, Katniss is asked to go to Command. There, she learns that she has earned the right to join a special group of sharpshooters that will be headed by Boggs. She will be working alongside Gale, Finnick, and a few others that she has yet to meet.
Plutarch then shares a hologram that showcases defensive traps that are currently in place in the Capitol. The traps are called pods. Katniss and Finnick compare the pods to the types of traps that they encountered in the Games.
Later, once the meeting in Command is over, Katniss lets Finnick know that she is keeping her mouth shut when it comes to telling her family about her mission. She suggests that Finnick do the same when it comes to telling Annie.
Their conversation is interrupted by Haymitch who informs them that Johanna failed her exam in the Block. She, in fact, is in the hospital. She was dealt a blow in the Block that triggered a post-traumatic stress episode. Back when Johanna was being tortured by the Capitol, they used water and electricity to torture her. To test her tolerance of such items, she faced a flood in the Block. Needless to say, she grew incredibly anxious and had to go to the hospital.
Haymitch suggests Katniss and Finnick go visit Johanna to brighten up her spirits. While Finnick meets with her in her hospital room, Katniss sneaks outside to gather a bundle of pine needles. Later, she gives Johanna the pine needles as a token of her old home in District Seven. Johanna happily accepts the gift.
Time passes and training continues. Katniss gets to know the others in her squad. There’s Jackson who is one rank below Boggs; Leeg 1 and Leeg 2 who are sisters; Mitchell; and Homes.
Eventually, Plutarch lets Katniss and her new comrades know the purpose of their squad. They are Squad 451, the Star Squad. They are an elite group who will fight chiefly behind the frontlines and who will be recorded for television along the way. They will be the propaganda machine of the continuing war efforts.
On the day in which the squad leaves, Katniss experiences an emotional goodbye with her family. She then departs for a trip to District Twelve where they take a car into a mountain that borders the Capitol. After the car trip, they move on foot to the outskirts of the Capitol where they settle down in a rebel base.
Katniss, Gale, and Finnick are never chosen to assist on the attacks in the Capitol. Katniss uses her time to study a simple map of the Capitol. Those in charge, like Boggs, have more sophisticated, holographic maps called Holos. Katniss yearns for a Holo so that she can better study the Capitol.
Eventually, Squad 451 loses one of their one, Leeg 2. She’s hit by a dart from a Pod.
Before long, a replacement is chosen for Leeg 2. An executive order from President Coin puts none other than Peeta in Squad 451. Katniss is rightfully alarmed.
