The group finally makes it to District Eight where they’re dropped off. Katniss is accompanied by the following people: Gale, Boggs, two men, two television cameramen, Cressida (a television director), and Messalla (Cressida’s assistant).

The first thing that the group encounters are wounded people who were injured in a recent bombing. Luckily, along with Katniss’ hovercraft, a second hovercraft came in from District Thirteen with a medical team and medical supplies.

Katniss and her entourage move into one of the two warehouses where the injured are taken. They are greeted by Commander Paylor who doesn’t seem too thrilled to see Katniss. She ushers the group inside to see the many wounded who are all crammed in the makeshift hospital. As they move forward, Katniss holds strong even though the putrid stench of the area is intolerable.

Soon, the injured make note of Katniss’ presence. Their pain seems to leave them for a moment as they rejoice in the presence of their Mockingjay. The only thing that seems to bring them down is the façade Katniss has to play about losing a baby. Before the Quarter Quell, Peeta lied in an interview with Caesar Flickerman and he exclaimed that Katniss was bearing his child. Peeta’s actions brought about all the more suspense for the Quarter Quell and all the more support for Katniss. Now, she has to go around pretending that she lost the baby that she never was bearing.

Katniss and her group eventually leave the compound. Katniss is left with a new sense of confidence and power. These people truly believe in her.

Suddenly, Boggs receives word of incoming enemy bombers. The group tries to get to the airstrip on time where they’ll be met by Haymitch and his hovercraft. However, the bombing soon begins.

The bombs land near the group. Katniss is propelled backwards towards one of the warehouses. Fortunately, Boggs is there to protect her.

They are told to escape to another warehouse that contains a bunker. They make their way there and nearly reach it when the bombing begins again. They take cover and Gale ends up on top of Katniss, shielding her from the surrounding explosions.

Before long, Katniss realizes that the evil Capitol is trying to destroy the warehouses that house the injured people. Despite a warning from her entourage, she follows the sounds of machine gun fire to the roof of another warehouse where Commander Paylor and a few others have gathered to shoot back at the enemy hoverplanes.

Katniss and Gale pull out their bows and release fire arrows at the hoverplanes. One of the planes is hit by Katniss’ arrows, but it seems to recover quickly. The two decide to try exploding arrows instead. Using exploding arrows, they are able to take down a few planes.

When the bombing comes to a halt, the group darts to the makeshift hospitals to find that one warehouse is on fire with people still inside. They all know that there is nothing that they can do to help.

In a fury, Katniss has the cameramen who accompany her record a message: she is angry, the Capitol is ruthless, and the Capitol’s tyranny must be stopped.
