District Two is a vast territory with a mountain in the middle that serves as the central location of the might of the Capitol’s military. The mountain was originally just a simple mine, until the Dark Days. Then, the Capitol lost its military might to District Thirteen, so it decided to cave out the mine and develop a whole building inside the mountain. There, the Capitol’s sophisticated military electronics and weaponry could be controlled and housed. Now, District Thirteen isn’t so sure how to crack into the mountain that they have nicknamed the “Nut.”

At this point in the war, the only two areas left for the rebels to conquer are the Nut and the Capitol itself.

Katniss spends time in the villages surrounding the nut with the other rebels. She is enjoying herself more out in the open, away from the underground stresses at District Thirteen. She’s free of things like a daily schedule, and having to face the reality of a brainwashed Peeta in the hospital.

Although Peeta is alive, Katniss is coming to realize that he is not well. He is not the Peeta she remembers; instead, the Peeta she recalls was killed after Snow plagued his mind with lies.

Beetee and Gale finally arrive to District Two. They come to try to figure out how to break into the Nut.

Upon their arrival, during his first conversation with Katniss, Gale remarks on how he can’t compete with Peeta for Katniss. It still seems that she feels more for Peeta than himself. Katniss expresses her confusion on the whole subject.

Later, as the two gather wood for fire they have a magical moment in which they embrace and kiss. Gale, though, senses Katniss’ confusion and stops the kissing. He compares her to somebody who has been drinking alcohol and wants to make-out.

Next, they begin conversing about the many girls that Gale has kissed. Katniss seems both surprised at the girls he’s kissed and the fact that he liked her best out of all the rest of them.

Katniss asks when Gale started liking her. Gale confesses it was about half a year ago at the Hob when Darius tried to talk Katniss into giving him a kiss. She, of course, refused the kiss; however, she unknowingly gained Gale’s interest.

The following day, the leaders and brains of the operation meet up. Katniss observes the powerful, tall, female leader of the District Two rebellion, Lyme, who also happens to be a victor of the Hunger Games. They try to come up with a way to penetrate the Nut, but nobody fabricates any fantastic ideas.

Finally, Gale speaks up. He suggests that they block all entrances by creating synchronized avalanches. There’s a train tunnel too that they’d have to destroy. He makes it clear that his plan entails draining the mountain of supplies by not allowing anybody to come in and out. Unfortunately, his plan is not without its drawback. By avalanching the mountain, they would also potentially block air vents needed to get fresh oxygen inside.
