After passing out due to blood loss, Katniss wakes up to Peeta rubbing her cheek. At first she thinks she’s back at home with the flu and it’s her mother who is taking care of her. She’s startled when she remembers where she is. Peeta is very nice to her, despite the fact that she tricked him into ingesting sleep syrup.

Peeta gets Katniss to eat some food and she recounts what happened to her from the start of the game. Peeta is shocked that Thresh let her go. Katniss compares Thresh’s sympathy towards her to the same sympathy that Peeta paid Katniss when he gave her some bread many years ago. Then, she asks Peeta why she showed pity towards her with the bread when they were younger. Peeta remarks that he’s been warned that it would take a lot of effort on his part before Katniss understood why, and then he changes the subject.

They talk about Cato and Thresh. Katniss secretly wishes that nobody else has to die, especially since she now realizes that Thresh seems like somebody she could be friends with. Katniss begins to cry because of her thoughts, and Peeta is quick to comfort her.

There is a storm brewing outside and it begins to intensify. The two huddle in the safety of their cave and eat their remaining food. Katniss declares that tomorrow they’ll have to go hunting.

The two talk about Thresh and his territory in the arena. It seems that he hides away in a pathless field that is filled with tall grass. Peeta is fearful of going into the field because he doesn’t know what dangers, other than Thresh, that the field holds. The two aren’t too sure what Thresh is eating in the field, but there has to be something there that is helping him keep strong and healthy. Katniss jokingly states that the field might hide bread that Thresh is eating. Peeta ponders if Haymitch can send them bread, but Katniss is quick to respond by saying that Haymitch must have spent a lot as is sending the sleep syrup. Peeta finally opens up about the sleep syrup and he warns Katniss not to drug him again. However, Peeta hesitantly acknowledges that Katniss did the right thing, especially since both of them survived the feast. Katniss tries to open up to Peeta to let him know that she drugged him to also keep him around for herself (she doesn’t want to be lonely; however, she fumbles through her words and doesn’t express herself well. Peeta catches on what she is trying to say and he goes in for their first passionate, true kiss.

The two then settle in for sleep. Peeta holds Katniss and she feels safe. The last time she felt this safe was when her father was around. She uses her night-vision goggles to keep watch as Peeta sleeps. Eventually, she struggles to keep awake and she has to wake up Peeta so he can keep watch as she slumbers off.

The next day the two want to go looking for food, but the weather doesn’t permit any scavenging. Instead, they have to stay indoors.

To worsen their situation, they aren’t receiving any help in terms of food or other items parachuting down from Haymitch. Katniss understands that if she is to get help from the outside world she has to drag on the love-story between her and Peeta. She knows she must speak about herself more deeply with Peeta to get such outside support.

Katniss then asks Peeta when he started liking her. Peeta lets her know that he got a crush on her when he first heard her singing on the first day of school. Like the songs of Katniss’ father, her song, her voice, caused the birds outside to stop singing because it was so beautiful. Moreover, her song found its way into Peeta’s heart. Katniss then comes to the realization that Peeta really likes her and that he hasn’t been putting on a show for the audience. She begins to realize that his feelings are probably legitimate.

Just as Katniss is about to go in for a kiss, the two hear a parachute drop outside. Inside, they find the meal that Katniss explained was her favorite back when she was first interviewed on television. Katniss realizes that she had given what the audience had wanted and she was rewarded for it.
