Katniss has blown up the Career Tributes’ pyramid of supplies by successfully triggering the mines that surrounded it. Even though she was far away, the shockwaves and smoke from the blast still hit Katniss, causing her some disorientation and dizziness. She is afraid when she finds blood pouring from an ear, afraid that she has lost her hearing, but she knows that since she’s being viewed by the public that she can’t show fear. Luckily, she figures out that she can crawl.

Katniss crawls to her hiding spot just as the Career Tributes make their way out to the scene. Cato is in a fit of huge rage. He cannot believe what he is seeing. The mines worked a little too well and he takes his rage out on the boy from District 13 by breaking his neck. The Career Tributes assume that somebody triggered the traps by approaching the pyramid and they assume there probably wasn’t any survivor.

That night when the deaths of the day are revealed the boy from District 10 appears as well as the boy from District 3. Knowing that they killed both these boys themselves, the Careers now learn that the person who triggered the bomb is alive. With night-vision goggles on, the remaining tributes go off to look for the perpetrator.

Katniss stays at her hiding spot, knowing that the Careers will go far off to find the perpetrator who they probably figure has run away. She has a meal and stays put with her night-vision goggles on. Katniss ponders over the remaining people in the Games, she covers herself with brush, and she falls asleep.

Later, Katniss awakens to somebody laughing. She sees Foxface scrounging through the debris. Foxface grabs a few things, hears something, and runs off. Katniss takes a moment to think over whether or not she should befriend Foxface, but she quickly decides not to. Foxface is not to be trusted. With Foxface darting away after she hears something, Katniss figures it’s time that she runs off too.

Katniss moves up the stream she found earlier. She is bothered by her injured left ear and she is growing more fearful that it will not heal. Eventually, she makes it to the rendezvous point where she was to meet with Rue. Rue is not around, so Katniss sticks around to wait for her. Katniss munches on a bunch of food and then heads off to look for Rue.

Katniss eventually comes upon the area where Rue was to set the third diversion fire. She finds the firewood that has been set up for the third fire, yet the fire was never lit. Katniss now begins to worry about Rue. Something prevented her from setting the third fire.

Just when Katniss begins to really worry about Rue she hears a song from a mockingjay. It’s the same song that Rue told Katniss she would teach the mockingjays to sing to signal to Katniss that she is okay. As she listens to the song being sung again, Katniss hears Rue’s scream in the distance. The scream turns into shouts for Katniss.

Katniss runs in the direction of the screams and she finds Rue trapped in a net. Katniss watches as a spear is plunged into the little girl.
