Katniss is regretting the way she acted before the Gamemakers. She knows that they are powerful figures, and although she hadn’t shot an arrow directly at them, she fears that shooting an arrow at their roast pig was a bad idea. She also fears for the well-being of her family who may also be affected by her actions, and she fears that she will be given a low-score by the Gamemakers. Apparently, the judges give the contestants they’ve observed scores as an indicator of how well they’ll play in the games.

Later, during dinner, Haymitch asks how Katniss and Peeta did before the judges. Peeta lets him know that the judges barely paid attention to him. Katniss describes what she did and Haymitch lets her know that the judges won’t do much to her, but they will probably make life difficult in the arena now. Relieved that she won’t get in big trouble and now relieved in knowing that her family will be safe, Katniss enjoys her meal.

After dinner, the points the tributes earned are revealed. Rue earned a seven, Peeta earned an eight, and Katniss is shocked to learn that she earned a remarkable eleven.

Back in her room, Katniss begins to reminisce in a flashback about her home. She remembers Gale and how hunting with him made things easier for her. She recalls the first time they met in the forest when she was inspecting one of his traps. He teased her from the start, calling her Catnip. Their friendship progressed from hunting partners into true allies and “confidantes.” Katniss really misses Gale and she opens up on how close they were.

She attempts to compare her relationship with Gale to her relationship with Peeta, but it is hard to do so. She trusted in Gale for her own survival, but she can’t trust Peeta on the same level since they’re playing a game where only one of them can come out alive.

During dinner everybody is really quiet. Katniss asks about their upcoming publicly televised interviews when Haymitch delivers a bombshell: Katniss and Peeta will no longer be coached together.
