The protagonist of the novel wakes up to find that her younger sister has found her way out of her bed and into the bed of her mother. Today is the day of the reaping, so she knows that Prim, her sister, finds comfort with her mother.
The protagonist lives with her family in the “Seam,” officially known as District 12. Today, the coal miners have stayed home because of the reaping. The street is consequently empty as the protagonist goes off to hunt. The protagonist makes her way from the Seam to the Meadow and into the woods. She passes into the woods by crawling beneath an electric fence that is usually turned off. Once in the woods, she finds her bow and arrows that she uses to hunt.
The protagonist speaks of her father who used to hunt with the bows and arrows that he crafted. He could have sold such weapons to others, however, such an act would have cost him his life if authorities had found out. Her father died by the hands of a mine a while back while poaching with his weapons. Now, the protagonist hides her father’s bows and arrows in the woods so she can use them to hunt.
The protagonist, who still remains unnamed, recounts her youth when she worried her mother over the trash-talking she did about Panem’s authority figures. Now, however, she’s learned to hide her thoughts and feelings.
Finally, the protagonist’s name is unveiled when she bumps into her friend Gale who is there to hunt with her. The protagonist’s name is Katniss.
Katniss describes her family a bit. Her mother went into shock when her father died and she almost let her kids starve. Worst of all, Katniss has a grudge against her now because of it. Even now, it’s Katniss who provides for her family. When Gale suggests that they run away, Katniss is left annoyed because she knows she has to stick around for Prim and her mother.
Eventually, Katniss and Gale go about hunting and gathering, and later they take their items to the Hob to trade them for other things. From there they go to the mayor’s house to sell him some strawberries. Madge, the mayor’s daughter, buys the strawberries. Gale takes a moment to jab her with a comment about how few entries Madge has for the reaping.
Katniss then describes how the entries for the reaping work. When a child turns twelve, they get an entry put in the drawing for the reaping for their district. The number of entries goes up with each year of age until the age of eighteen. If a family wants supplies for a year for one person, then the child can have an extra entry added. The child can even add an extra entry for supplies for each member of their family, but that entry still stays under the child’s name.
Katniss finally makes her way home and gets ready for the reaping. After she gets dressed up with her mother and sister, they make their way to the square for District 12’s drawing.
Before the names are chosen, some background information is given about Panem and the Hunger Games. Turns out that Panem, led by the Capital, formed after the destruction of North America. It first consisted of 13 districts, but during the Dark Days the districts rebelled and all survived but for District 13. To punish the districts and remind them of the Dark Days each year Panem holds the Hunger Games: a fight to the death between 24 contestants in an arena. Each district supplies a boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. The last person standing is rewarded with a great life and their district also gets rewarded with things like food.
Finally, after she escapes the grasp of the town drunk, Haymitch Abernatchy, Effie Trinket takes the stage to pull the names of the District 12 children who will enter the Hunger Games. The first name she picks with a whopping one entry in the bowl is none other than Primrose Everdeen.
