The new rule added to the Hunger Games allows Katniss to ally up with the other tribute from her district, Peeta. Now, the two of them can work together to both win the Games side by side. Katniss begins to think about Peeta and she now knows she must work together with him to win the Games. She goes on to figure out that the Gamemakers must be seeing a public interest in the romance between her and Peeta, and so they created the new rule to please audiences and bring in viewership. Katniss also deduces that the whole time she though that Peeta was playing her as part of the game, he really was trying to help and save her. The audience probably believes in his romantic interest so much that the Gamemakers chose to help support it.

Katniss begins to ponder who else is left in the Games. She comes up with a few names: Peeta, of course; Foxface, who seems to be hiding out while others die; Thresh, who seems to have acquired his own territory; Cato; and the girl from District 2. Cato is also from District 2, so now he can work together with the girl from District 2 without either of them fearing any kind of back-stabbing.

Eventually, Katniss convinces herself to go to sleep and she awakes in a cautious state. She knows that she now has to find Peeta. She also knows that the Career Tributes also know that same fact. Katniss figures that the Career Tributes might choose to allow Katniss to find Peeta because Peeta is undoubtedly in no condition to fight after being wounded by Cato and probably by tracker jacker stings.

Katniss begins to search her memory for ideas as to where Peeta might be hiding, but she can’t come up with anything. She remembers that Peeta probably was stung by tracker jackers and that he was wounded badly by Cato. She finally deduces that he might have gone to stream because firstly, he needed water to survive his wounds and secondly, the stream would provide covering for his tracks as he moved down it. It would be an easy-route for a wounded person to take. Katniss makes a fake camp-fire to draw off the other tributes, and then she heads for the stream.

Katniss follows the stream to a part of it that she has never ventured into. Eventually, she comes upon a streak of blood that she follows. Before long, she hears Peeta and then she finds him camouflaged among mud and leaves. They reunite with a joke from Peeta on how Katniss should kiss him (they are “lovers” according to the Gamemakers’ plot, after all). Almost immediately after reuniting, Katniss drags Peeta to the stream to wash off his camouflage and to tend to his wounds. He’s so weak that she has to do all the moving for him.

Eventually, Katniss gets a good look at the wounds on the upper half of Peeta. She tends to them quickly since they are wounds that she knows she can help heal (four tracker jacker stings and a burn). She also washes his shirt and jacket, and she gives him a pill for his fever. She tries to get him to eat, but he is too sick to have an appetite. Luckily, he does have some fruit.

Before he dozes off to sleep, Katniss convinces Peeta to let her tend to his leg wound. She is really taken back by the sight and smell of the wound when she finally peers at it. The slash on his leg is badly infected and it smells awful. Initially, she thinks of running away as she did when a badly burnt man came to visit her mother for help; however, she composes herself like her mom would do and she begins by cleaning the wound. Then, she experiments on the wound with the only medicine that she has which might help the infection, the same leaves that Rue taught Katniss to use on tracker jacker stings.

As Katniss is applying the leaves to the wound, Peeta asks her for a kiss again. Katniss totally rejects him and she continues fixing up his wound with leaves and burn ointment (she figures that the burn ointment can maybe help the infection too).

Eventually, Peeta falls asleep for a bit. Katniss later wakes him up and lets him know that they need to get moving. He isn’t able to walk well, so they don’t make it too far. Luckily, they find a cave where they can hide. Inside the cave, Peeta tries to tell Katniss what to do if he dies but Katniss quickly hushes him up by giving him a kiss, her first kiss with a boy. Katniss doesn’t think much of the kiss, just that Peeta’s lips are hot.

She then steps outside and is surprised to find a parachute floating down. It only contains hot broth. Katniss puts two and two together and realizes that the more she utilizes the love-story plot between her and Peeta, the more help she will receive from the outside world. Katniss gave the audience a kiss and she was rewarded. She will now begin playing the love-card more often to get more help. She quickly hops inside the cave, wakes up Peeta with kisses, and shows Peeta the treasure that came from the sky.
