Katniss is released into the arena by means of a circular elevator that brought her up from the catacombs. There, she must wait on the floor of the elevator, a circular metal disk, for sixty seconds before venturing off. Meanwhile, a giant horn-like structure, the Cornucopia, spews out items that the tributes can use during the games. The best items are closest to the Cornucopia, while the least helpful items are spewed further away from it. Katniss knows she must just run away and not be tempted by the items; however, she is tempted by a bow and arrows. Luckily, just before the gong rings announcing the start of the Games, in the distance Katniss sees what she assumes to be Peeta shaking his head. She isn’t sure if he really shook his head or not and sits there thinking about it, just as the gong rings.

With no time to spare, Katniss grabs a few things around her, bread, a piece of plastic, and a backpack. As Katniss reaches for the backpack, another boy also reaches for it but he is struck with a knife that was thrown by another tribute. Knowing that the next knife thrown by the girl from District 2 has her name on it, Katniss flees. Her backpack is struck with a knife. Luckily, the knife-throwing girl goes back to the Cornucopia for items rather than chase Katniss.

Katniss runs for the woods and ventures deep into them. She rejoices in her solitariness, but knows that in reality she is very much a spectacle for the viewers watching her at home.

Katniss worries for a little bit over the fate of Peeta. The one thought that puts her to ease is the idea that perhaps Peeta has already died so that she doesn’t have to face him and kill him later.

Katniss finally takes a moment to open up her backpack. Inside she finds some provisions, but no water like she had hoped. Luckily, she saw a rabbit earlier and she knows that water must be nearby to help such wildlife survive.

Within the backpack Katniss finds wire that she uses to build an animal trap. She makes camp nearby, up in a tree. There, she conceals herself and her backpack in a sleeping bag that was also in the backpack. She uses her belt to latch herself to the tree limb, and she prepares herself for a little sleep. Before falling asleep, Katniss observes the faces of the dead tributes appearing one by one in the sky above. She’s happy to see that Peeta was not one of the fallen tributes.

Katniss awakes later to the snapping of branches and somebody nearby warming their hands in a fire. She can’t believe that somebody would be so foolish as to start a fire in the dark. Other tributes could easily see and follow the flames.

Soon enough, a pack of career tributes come upon the girl who has lit the fire nearby. They kill her despite her pleas and her begging. After killing the girl, Katniss becomes a little anxious as the group of Career Tributes move near her hiding spot. The group argues on if they should go back to make sure the tribute they just attacked is truly killed or if they should continue looking around for other tributes. One tribute, none other than Peeta, shouts that he’ll go check on the girl to make sure she’s dead and then they should be on their way.
