Romeo Montague.
A hopeless romantic, Romeo is one of the main characters in the play. At first, he is in love with a girl named Rosaline. That love is short-lived. At a Capulet masquerade he finds himself a new love in Juliet. The play focuses on the love between these two star-crossed lovers.

Juliet Capulet.
Juliet is the only daughter of the Capulets. Although she is being chased after by the charming Count Paris, Juliet has no interest in him. She, instead, has vowed herself to her enemy’s only son, Romeo.

Montague.
Romeo’s father, Montague is the patriarch of his wealthy household. It is his household that is in a long-held feud with the Capulets. Montague is, at first, worried about his son’s depression. Little does he know that later on he will have greater things to worry about.

Lady Montague.
Romeo's mother, she loves her son more than he will ever know. When Romeo is banished from Verona, she doesn't take it so well.

Capulet.
Juliet's father and head of the Capulet household, he at first appears to be compassionate. He wants to marry Juliet to Paris only if she consents to it. We later see more of his compassion when he allows Romeo to attend his ball uninvited. Later, his compassion disappears when he demands that Juliet marry Paris.

Lady Capulet.
Juliet's mother, her only interest seems to be making wedding arrangements for Juliet.

The Nurse.
Juliet's nanny, she has raised Juliet as she would have raised her own. She goes to great lengths to secure Juliet's happiness.

Friar Lawrence.
A great friend to Romeo, he devises plan after plan that should have helped Romeo and Juliet live happily ever after. His plans, though, seem to have all been fated to end on a sour note.

Benvolio Montague.
A good friend and cousin of Romeo, Benvolio seems to have a sense of maturity and calm that similar characters lack. He knows how to have fun and he also knows the importance of keeping the peace.

Tybalt Capulet.
Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin. He truly hates the Montagues. He also has quite the unruly temper. Tybalt is so full of anger towards his enemy that when he recognizes Romeo at the Capulet party, he is ready to duel Romeo then and there. It is only Capulet who stops Tybalt from making a scene. Tybalt, though, holds a grudge against Romeo for this very incident.

Mercutio.
A friend to Romeo and Benvolio, Mercutio always knows how to have some fun. He is quite witty, but he also has a short-fuse. He is related to both Prince Escalus and Count Paris.

Prince Escalus.
Prince Escalus is the Prince of Verona. He also serves as the sheriff of the town. He oversees the law in Verona. He tends to show up after quarrels occur out on the streets.
