The masked ball has begun at the Capulet’s household. Capulet welcomes everybody to the dance. He gets his servants to do a bit of work and then he has a brief conversation with a cousin.
Romeo, who is also inside the party with his friends, has caught eye of a new girl. He asks a servant who she is, but the servant doesn’t know. Romeo can’t believe he has ever loved anybody before, for tonight is the first time he has ever seen true beauty. He is head over heels for this unknown girl.
Tybalt, a hot-tempered Capulet, catches the voice of Romeo and he immediately recognizes him as a Montague. Tybalt is ready to strike at Romeo, but Capulet is quick to stop him. He tells Tybalt that Romeo is a well-respected youth in Verona, and that a quarrel at his party with somebody with such a good reputation is not worth it. Tybalt has to let Romeo be.
By now, Romeo has made his way to his new love, Juliet. He grabs her hand and they touch each other’s hands as if in prayer (hand to hand). Juliet remarks on how their hands are like those of pilgrims. These pilgrims travel to statues of saints to touch the statues’ hands in a similar manner. She calls it a holy palmer’s kiss.
The palm to palm kiss isn’t good enough for Romeo. Romeo points out that saints who pray also have lips that they use for prayer. He tells Juliet that they should use their lips in the same manner that they are now using their hands. In other words, they should bring their lips together in a kiss. The two then kiss. Romeo remarks on how the sin that was on his lips was taken away by Juliet’s lips. Juliet wants her sin back so they kiss again.
They are interrupted by the Nurse. The Nurse says that Juliet is wanted by her mother. Juliet leaves and Romeo is left alone with the Nurse. Romeo asks the Nurse who Juliet’s mother is. The Nurse hints at the fact that her mother is Lady Capulet. Romeo can’t believe that he is in love with a foe. Romeo is left to wonder about his predicament.
The Nurse and Juliet meet up again. Juliet still doesn’t know much of anything about the boy she just spoke to and kissed. She has the Nurse go figure out who this mysterious boy is. The Nurse goes and comes back with the news that his name is Romeo Montague. Juliet is stunned to learn that her only love came from her only hate. The Nurse catches a whiff of what Juliet states. Then, they are interrupted by Juliet’s mother who is calling them.
