Paris goes to speak to Friar Lawrence about the upcoming wedding. Paris remarks on how he’s discussed very little about love with Juliet. She is too torn over the death of Tybalt to talk about love. Paris and the Capulets plan to bring about the wedding quickly to end her tears.

Juliet appears to speak to the friar. Paris is happy to see her. Juliet is there to supposedly confess to the priest, so Paris leaves to grant her some privacy with the friar.

Friar Lawrence tells Juliet that he has learned of Capulet’s plan to marry Juliet off to Paris. Juliet asks the friar to use his experience to help her. If he can’t help, then she’ll use a dagger to help herself. The friar retorts that if she is strong enough to kill herself, then she’s strong enough to do something that resembles death. He seems to have a plan to prevent Juliet from being forced to marry Paris. Juliet begins giving examples of things that she would do to help prevent her marriage to Paris. To avoid Paris and be with Romeo, she would do things like hang out where serpents live or be chained with bears.

Friar Lawrence instructs Juliet to go home and merrily tell her parents that she will marry Paris. Then, she is to drink a bottle filled with a potion that he’s prepared for her. The potion will make it appear as if she’s dead. Then, in the morning, when it appears as if she’s dead, her family will take her to the Capulet’s tomb.

The second part of the plan requires another friar to go to Mantua. Romeo is hiding out there. The friar will take Romeo a letter that discusses the plan. After learning of the plan Romeo well return to Verona, he will go to the Capulet tomb, and he will be there when Juliet awakens. They then can both escape from Verona and live happily together.
