Friar John returns to Friar Lawrence’s cell. Friar Lawrence had sent Friar John to Mantua with a letter for Romeo that discussed the “sleeping beauty” plan. Friar Lawrence asks Friar John how the meeting went with Romeo. Friar John confesses that he was unable to go. Friar John went to get another friar to go with him. He found the other friar in a house filled with sickly people. When they tried to leave, they were forced to stay because the house was put under quarantine.

Friar Lawrence then asks who ended up delivering the letter. Friar John says that nobody delivered it because he wasn’t able to get a messenger out since they were so afraid of infection spreading from the quarantined house. Friar Lawrence begins to panic, knowing that Juliet will awaken soon in a tomb alone. He asks Friar John to go get an iron crowbar so that he may break into the tomb. He will fetch Juliet away and have her stay in his cell until he can get another message out to Romeo.
