The chapter begins with Graff and Anderson speaking at the lake. Graff explains how he was acquitted of charges that were being held against him. The prosecutors couldn’t prove that they would have won the war without Graff’s unconventional training methods.
The two men talk about the fate of Ender. They both know that Ender cannot return home to Earth. He is too dangerous since he could easily be manipulated by an individual or group who wants to attain power.
They conclude the conversation by talking about the upcoming colonization of former bugger colonies by humans. Graff is to become the Minister of Colonization.
The scene, next, returns to Ender. Ender, who is now an admiral, has learned of the fact that he will never return home and of the fact that he killed both Stilson and Bonzo. He is perplexed on how Graff’s trial focuses on the deaths of these two boys, but fails to mention the billions of buggers Ender killed. Ender has human and bugger blood on his hands and his conscious will not let him get over it.
Despite his guilt, Ender has tried to remain useful on Eros by helping with the new colonization of worlds. He doesn’t like dealing with the colonists himself, but he does other things to help with colonization.
One day, Ender has a surprise visitor, Valentine. She is going to be part of the first colony and has come to persuade Ender to join her on her journey. She lets him know that she is the one that prevented him from going back to Earth, since she knew that once there he would be forced to do Peter’s bidding. She, in fact, bought her freedom and Ender’s freedom by blackmailing Peter with some incriminating evidence on how psychotic he is.
Valentine, then, reveals some interesting information. She promised the people that she, Demosthenes, would be on the first colonization ship. She never revealed to them who she was, but she would be on that ship. Furthermore, the ship would be driven by Rackham. Lastly, Ender would be given the chance to become governor of the first colony. All Ender had to do is agree to go with Valentine and he would have a whole new world to lead. After very little thought, Ender agreed to go with Valentine.
The story fast-forwards to Ender’s new life on the new world. Ender learns much about the buggers by the remains of their settlements. He governs wells and eventually his task of leading the settlers is taken over by a governing council. The people adapt well to their new home and care little for what is happening on Earth.
After being on the new planet for a while, a new ship filled with colonists begins to head to Ender’s World. It is Ender’s task to find a good place nearby where the new colonists can settle. He explores surrounding areas with a boy named Abra.
Eventually, the two come across an area that looks just like the fantasy land where Ender killed the Giant in the game at Battle School. They make their way to the End of the World where Ender finds the castle tower. He decides to enter the castle tower alone. There, he finds replicas of everything that he experienced in the game. Somehow, the buggers were able to get into his head well enough to build all of these replicas of the places that Ender had once feared in the game.
Eventually, Ender comes across the mirror that he once peered in within the game. He finds that hidden behind the mirror is a baby queen bugger in pupa form. The bugger is able to impose memories into Ender’s head and Ender sees how she was placed in this secret, safe hiding hole. The queen goes onto show Ender the final feelings that buggers, including the hive queen, felt during their final moments. The hive queen felt bad that humans had not forgiven them for their first two invasion attempts. The buggers were driven to fight the humans because they assumed that humans were not capable of thinking, and it was only after the Second Invasion that they learned otherwise. After learning that humans could think, the buggers stopped being aggressive towards humans.
The pupa also shows Ender within his head how he can care for it, allowing the pupa to hatch, grow, and create more buggers. Ender is the only hope for the future of the bugger race.
Ender finally figures out that the buggers must have tapped inside his head using the ansible system. Then, they created a whole world of clues that would lead him to this pupa.
Ender decides to keep the pupa safe.
Later, Ender lets Valentine read something that came from the pupa. It’s as if the hive-queen wrote the words that Ender shares with her. It is an account of how the queens wanted to look for harmony, but failed to find harmony with the human race. It also tells humans to live on their land, use their tunnels, and use their past homes to survive. It is a small book of virtues and hope that Ender signs as “The Speaker of the Dead.”
The words are then published into a book that is shared throughout the human worlds. “The Speaker of the
Dead” becomes a religious book of sorts that many people learn to follow.
Back on Earth, Peter figures out who wrote “The Speaker of the Dead.” Peter is now old and coming close to death, while Ender and Valentine are still quite young. The trip to Ender’s World slowed down the aging process in all the colonists since they traveled so quickly. Knowing that his brother is still in his prime and knowing that he wrote such convincing words from the hive-queen’s perspective, Peter asks Ender to write a book on his behalf. Peter uses the ansible to tell Ender what he wants described in his book. The books, The Hegemon and The Hive-Queen, are a hit and are closely praised and followed by many.
Eventually, Ender convinces Valentine to travel around with him to other colonies. He tells Valentine that he wants to travel because happiness is on his doorstep and he cannot function well if he becomes happy (he is too accustomed to feeling pain). His true reason behind his desire to travel is to find a suitable place to care for the pupa.
